Job summary

The City of Stockton is seeking a Deputy City Attorney IV - Advisory to provide senior legal counsel on municipal matters. This exempt, at-will role involves advisory and litigation support, including civil and criminal matters, for City departments and boards, with potential for complex case work and interaction with the City Council.

Qualified candidates hold a JD, CA Bar admission, and at least three years of comparable experience within municipal government. Occasional travel may be required.

Qualifications

• Must possess a Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university.
• Active California Bar membership required; admitted for practice in California.
• Three years of professional legal experience comparable to a Deputy City Attorney with the City of Stockton.

Responsibilities

• Under direction, performs legal work related to municipal government operations; conducts research, prepares opinions, memoranda, rules, and regulations.
• Advise city departments, boards, committees, and commissions; prosecute misdemeanor/infraction violations and represent the City in litigation.
• May work in Litigation or Advisory tracks; handle criminal and civil matters across various municipal law areas.
• Builds relationships with City staff and public; manages workload to accommodate changing priorities.
• Presents legal recommendations to City Council and supports client on public hearings.
