Role

At Octus, we're seeking a highly skilled and proactive Senior Database Administrator to join our dynamic Platform team. This critical role demands deep expertise in managing cloud-based databases, particularly Postgres and MySQL, at an enterprise scale. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, capable of driving projects independently, and possess a strong command of industry-standard best practices for performance, monitoring, and enhancement. A thorough understanding of the AWS ecosystem is also essential. This individual will play a key role in supporting and scaling our Octus products, collaborating with multiple engineering teams to ensure the seamless integration of robust database solutions for our Octus products.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy, configure, and manage PostgreSQL and MySQL in cloud-based environments (AWS), adhering to best practices for enterprise-level deployments. Optimize database configurations for peak performance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Implement and manage comprehensive database monitoring tools to track health and performance. Configure intelligent alerts for proactive issue identification and resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and tune complex SQL queries for optimal performance.
  • Develop and maintain robust, enterprise-grade backup and recovery strategies using AWS-native tools. Regularly test and refine backup procedures to ensure data integrity and minimize recovery time objectives (RTOs).
  • Set up and manage advanced replication strategies for high availability, fault tolerance, and disaster recovery. Implement appropriate replication methods (streaming, logical) based on specific requirements.
  • Implement and enforce robust cloud-native security measures, including identity and access management (IAM), encryption, and compliance controls. Stay ahead of AWS security updates and apply patches promptly.
  • Collaborate closely with development teams to design, optimize, and scale database schemas for enterprise applications. Review and recommend enhancements to existing designs. Proactively identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, slow queries, indexing issues, and resource utilization inefficiencies.
  • Plan and execute complex database upgrades with meticulous attention to minimizing downtime and ensuring data integrity. Stay current with the latest AWS database releases and patches.
  • Monitor enterprise-scale database growth and performance trends. Proactively anticipate capacity needs and provide strategic recommendations for resource scaling and cost optimization within the AWS environment.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts for routine database maintenance and administration tasks.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert, providing guidance and expertise on complex database solutions to cross-functional teams.
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation for database configurations, processes, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Develop, test, and maintain comprehensive disaster recovery plans for enterprise-level environments, ensuring business continuity. Conduct regular disaster recovery drills and simulations.
  • Investigate and resolve complex, enterprise-scale database incidents and issues promptly, actively participating in the Incident Management process.
  • Provide on-call support for production databases, addressing critical issues within defined SLAs.
  • Share expertise and knowledge with team members, mentoring and fostering a culture of continuous learning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience.
  • 6+ years of progressive DBA experience, with at least 4 years specializing in Postgres administration in enterprise environments.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience managing databases in AWS.
  • Proven experience with large-volume Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) database systems at scale.
  • Strong command of Linux commands and shell scripting for database administration and automation.
  • Deep understanding of relational database management systems (RDBMS) principles and best practices for enterprise deployments.
  • Thorough knowledge of database security best practices and compliance requirements (e.g., SOC2).
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, analytical abilities, and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, drive projects from inception to completion, and collaborate effectively within a team environment.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform is highly desirable.
  • Experience with configuration management tools like SaltStack, Ansible, or Chef is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of the AWS ecosystem and its database-related services.
