Senior Database Engineer

Location: Vienna, VA.

Summary

The Senior Database Engineer, you will work with a broad range of customers on enterprise database design and implementation strategies while applying Esri technology best practices. You will consult with customers to understand business and technical requirements, design enterprise data management strategies, and implement those strategies throughout the engagement life cycle. You will work both independently and as part of project teams to configure back-end geospatial database management capabilities that support customer workflows utilizing ArcGIS web, desktop, and mobile applications.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement robust, scalable, and secure database solutions to support mission-critical applications.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams during all phases of implementation, including requirements, analysis, design, build/configuration, and deployment.
• Configure and maintain database environments, including backup, restore, high availability, and disaster recovery strategies.
• Monitor and tune database performance using industry-standard tools and methodologies such as query optimization and indexing strategies.
• Implement data security measures, access controls, and compliance standards across environments.
• Automate routine database loading, maintenance, and monitoring tasks to improve efficiency.
• Provide technical guidance and best practices for database design, migration, and integration projects.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, GIS, or related STEM field.
• 5+ years of hands‑on experience in database design, administration, and optimization for Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or SAP HANA
  • Familiarity with database design principles, data loading techniques, backup and recovery solutions, performance monitoring and tuning, database maintenance, and security.
  • Scripting skills in SQL and Python for automation and data workflows.
• Active or current Top Secret Security Clearance with SCI eligibility.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in technical support or customer‑facing GIS roles.
• Experience with data conversion or migration.
• Knowledge of Linux and UNIX environments.
• Familiarity with web mapping and remote sensing tools.
• Proficiency in Python scripting and SQL.
• GIS certifications.

• Exposure to geospatial concepts such as spatial data types, coordinate systems, and spatial indexing.
