Job summary

Joby Aviation is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join our Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS) team. You will drive algorithmic development behind predictive health, safety, and reliability of our aircraft, partnering with SMEs across propulsion, flight test, battery systems, and structures to design, develop, and deploy advanced algorithms that monitor health and usage of critical subsystems.

Qualifications

• MS or PhD in aerospace, mechanical, electrical engineering, computer science or related field.
• 3+ years of post-graduate experience focused on PHM or CBM+ for electro-mechanical systems.
• Exceptional production-quality Python skills with automated testing and version control.
• Ability to own implementation architecture and project lifecycles end-to-end.
• Foundations in signal processing, time-series analysis, and frequency-domain fundamentals.
• Experience applying regression, neural nets, and ML for anomaly detection in hardware.
• Experience with Spark or big data tools; Databricks a plus.
• Strong collaboration and communication with interdisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Develop health algorithms to evaluate condition, degradation, and RUL of subsystems.
• Collaborate with SMEs across flight physics, design, test, reliability, and systems engineering.
• Analyze aircraft behavior and loads using sensor and time-series data to detect anomalies and degradation.
• Track component usage and fatigue models to inform fleet-wide replacements.
• Write production-grade Python code, participate in code reviews and best practices.
• Own end-to-end data pipelines and services for large flight/test data.
• Support validation with real-world tests and explore ML/AI tooling for PHM workflows.
