Zonos is building data-driven solutions for cross-border trade, and this Senior Data Scientist role sits at the center of turning messy real-world signals into production-ready models. You will tackle production data problems across areas like classification, valuation, risk, and compliance while working closely with engineering to evaluate performance, manage uncertainty, and keep systems stable after deployment.
In this on-site role at the company headquarters in Saint George, UT, you will report to the Chief Data Scientist and lead end-to-end work that may involve ML/LLMs, Bayesian approaches, experimentation, optimization, or rule-based systems.
What you’ll do
- Own core product data problems such as classification, valuation, risk, and compliance, choosing an approach ranging from statistical modeling and classical ML to deep learning and LLMs, optimization, or simple rules.
- Work with messy, multilingual product and shipment data, first clarifying what the data actually says before building models.
- Quantify uncertainty and translate it into operational decisions, including when to act, when to route to a human, and how to account for the cost of different errors.
- Build evaluations, experiments, and analyses to determine whether changes truly worked and to maintain standards when results fall short.
- Develop production-quality Python and SQL, then ship solutions, monitor outcomes, and iterate.
- Participate in the on-call rotation to debug production issues, including subtle failures that emerge only under real traffic.
- Apply rigorous thinking to product and business decisions beyond individual projects.
What we’re looking for
- 5+ years of hands-on data science experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or 3+ years with a Master’s or PhD, including work that ran in production.
- Strong statistics depth across inference, experimental design, and uncertainty.
- Practical ML and LLM/NLP experience, including fine-tuning, embeddings, evaluation, and text classification at scale.
- Strong Python and SQL.
Tools and technologies
- Python, SQL
- LLMs, NLP, embeddings
- GLM, transformer
Compensation and benefits
- $200,000–$275,000 annual base salary.
- Relocation assistance is available for candidates relocating to St. George, Utah.
- Medical, Dental, Vision, & Life: Zonos pays 100% of the employee premium.
- Paid parental leave and other life event leave.
- 401k retirement plan with generous company match.
- 4 weeks of vacation, plus sick and other paid time off.
- Employee Assistance Program.
- 1 month paid time off at the 5-year anniversary.
- Office stocked with snacks and drinks, and weekly company lunch.
How Zonos works
- Zonos doesn’t have product managers. At the senior level, you work directly with customers and internal teams to understand the problem, decide what’s worth solving, and ship.
- You’ll exercise judgment by pushing back, proposing simpler approaches, and identifying when the data does not support a decision.
- Disagreements are resolved quickly and in writing, with clear ownership.
On-site location
- This role is on-site at the headquarters in St. George, Utah.
- Relocation assistance is available for candidates moving to the area.
Helpful extras include optimization or operations research, causal inference, forecasting, Bayesian methods, experience serving models on GPUs, and familiarity with trade, customs, logistics, ecommerce, or payments data.
