Job summary

Headway is building a decision engine to improve mental health outcomes. We are hiring a Senior Data Scientist to partner with a cross-functional product team, connecting analytics, experimentation, causal inference, and predictive modeling into actionable recommendations.

The role is hybrid and based in New York, SF, or Seattle, with a salary range of USD 180,000 - 225,000 per year and requires 6+ years of experience using data to drive product or business decisions.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the analytics partner within the product pod, working with Product, Engineering, Design, Ops, and Clinical stakeholders to define questions, metrics, guardrails, and decision rules.
• Design and analyze A/B tests and quasi-experiments, including hypothesis definition, power considerations, and predefined success criteria.
• Use funnel, cohort, segmentation, and lifecycle analysis to connect behavior to strategy and identify impact areas.
• Apply causal inference when experiments are not feasible, using diff-in-diff, matching, and regression-based designs with uncertainty quantification.
• Develop predictive models to operationalize insights through feature development, validation, backtesting, calibration, and launch criteria with monitoring plans.
• Create analysis and narratives that are crisp and honest about uncertainty, driving action across teams.
• Raise analytical standards by sharing guidance on metrics, experimentation, and analytical quality.

In this Senior Data Scientist role, you’ll partner with a cross-functional product team to connect analytics, experimentation and causal inference, and operational predictive modeling into recommendations that teams can act on.

This position is hybrid and based in New York, NY, San Francisco, CA, or Seattle, WA. The salary range is USD 180,000 - 225,000 per year, and the role requires 6+ years of experience using data to drive product or business decisions.

What you’ll do

• Serve as the analytics partner within the product pod, working closely with Product, Engineering, Design, Ops, and Clinical stakeholders to define questions, metrics, guardrails, and decision rules.
• Design and analyze A/B tests and quasi-experiments, including hypothesis definition, power considerations, and pre-defined success criteria.
• Use funnel, cohort, segmentation, and lifecycle analysis to connect behavior to strategy, clarifying how people and providers experience Headway and where product changes can have the biggest impact.
• Apply causal inference when experiments are not feasible, using approaches such as diff-in-diff, matching, and regression-based designs with principled uncertainty quantification.
• Develop predictive models to operationalize vetted insights through feature development, validation, backtesting, calibration, and clear launch criteria with monitoring plans.
• Create analysis and narratives that are crisp and honest about uncertainty, driving action across teams.
• Raise analytical standards by contributing shared guidance on metrics, experimentation, and analytical quality, enabling faster iteration with confidence.

What you’ll need

• 6+ years using data to influence product or business decisions in environments such as product, growth, health, engineering, or operations.
• Strong SQL plus strong proficiency in Python or R for analysis and modeling.
• Depth in experimentation and causal inference under real-world constraints.
• Comfort using AI tools as part of your workflow, including LLMs and coding assistants to accelerate analysis, prototyping, and documentation, while maintaining ownership of judgment and rigor.
• Practical modeling experience: feature engineering, model comparison, cross-validation or backtesting, calibration, and post-launch monitoring.
• Strong product sense and opinions, with a track record of connecting analytics recommendations to measurable outcomes.
• Ability to communicate complex work to non-technical audiences without losing the truth.
• Self-starter mindset: you can prioritize, follow through, and work with limited oversight.
• Motivation for the mission of improving access and affordability in mental healthcare.

Data Science at Headway is organized into three pillars aligned to key parts of the business:

• Patient: owns the journey from finding mental health care on Headway through matching, booking, attending the first appointment, and staying in care. Work includes consumer funnel analytics, experimentation, and marketing science.
• Payer & Outcomes: drives patient outcomes, supports a trustworthy and safe provider network, and delivers value-based care with responsible costs relative to outcomes.
• Provider: owns the provider relationship, reflecting the belief that clinician support improves patient care.

Compensation details

• $180K - $225K base salary range, offers equity
• The expected base pay range is $180,000-$225,000 based on qualifications, experience, and geographic location.
• In addition to base salary, the role may be eligible for an equity grant depending on position and level.
