Job summary

OpportuLand is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to own core query engine components in a large-scale data platform. You will drive planning, optimization, and execution while maintaining production-quality code and deep ownership of distributed systems.

Responsibilities include diagnosing issues, backporting fixes, and improving tests, diagnostics, and observability. Requires cloud experience (GCP/AWS/Azure) and strong coding skills in Java or C++.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years in backend / systems software engineering with ownership of components end-to-end.
• Strong proficiency in Java or C++ with deep understanding of OOP, systems design, memory management, concurrency, and async programming.
• Advanced SQL and understanding of query execution internals — planning, optimization, and operators.
• Experience building or extending data processing systems: query engines, distributed databases, ETL/ELT, or analytical platforms.
• Ability to assess change risk in a mature production system; experience supporting software across versions/environments.
• Hands-on Jenkins and modern CI/CD workflows; Docker and Kubernetes.
• Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
• Strong Git/GitHub workflows and rigorous code-review habits.
• Comfort with AI-assisted development workflows and tools for debugging and test generation.
• Prior mentoring, design leadership, or end-to-end ownership experience.
• English B2+ for daily collaboration with US-based teams.
• Willingness to work EU business hours shifted 2–3 hours later for overlap.

Responsibilities

• Architect, design, and implement query engine components — planner, optimizer, execution operators, memory management, and data access layers.
• Diagnose and resolve production and customer-reported issues across the full query path — correctness, performance, memory, concurrency, resiliency, compatibility.
• Develop, review, and backport fixes across multiple release lines; strengthen regression prevention.
• Write and review high-quality, performance-critical code in Java and/or C++.
• Analyze query profiles, execution plans, logs, and telemetry to drive performance optimization.
• Integrate with columnar formats, open table formats, and connectivity drivers.
• Improve regression tests, diagnostics, and observability; contribute to CI/CD pipelines and quality processes.
• Mentor engineers, lead code reviews, and help set technical standards.
• Debug complex cross-layer issues spanning planning, execution, memory, and I/O with US leads.
