Job summary

MBTA seeks a Lead Software Engineer to drive architecture and technical strategy for civic technology projects. You will mentor engineers, design subsystem components, and own team-level reliability while collaborating with UX and PM to shape the roadmap.

The role emphasizes on-call readiness, incident response, and strong coding discipline across cloud-hosted systems, adopting best practices and cross-team standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience with leadership and architecture.
• Experience delivering complex projects with multiple team members.
• Proficiency in at least two TIobe top-20 languages.
• Experience with production incidents, monitoring, and on-call.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical design for subsystem components and services.
• Architect complex systems and guide team members.
• Reduce systemic reliability risks within team boundaries.
• Mentor junior engineers and drive technical decisions.
• Collaborate with UX/PM to shape roadmap and technical strategy.
• Participate in retrospectives to improve delivery.
• Ensure best practices, policies, and cross-team standards are followed.
• Debug cloud-hosted production systems using observability tools.
• Review code for correctness, performance, and reliability.
• Participate in on-call rotation and incident response.
• Contribute to CI pipelines and organization-wide infrastructure.
