Job summary

Abbott in Madison, WI seeks a Principal Data Engineer (IC) to drive enterprise data initiatives across domains. This senior individual contributor leads architectural direction, standards, and reference architectures, while remaining hands-on through prototyping and critical-path development.

You'll collaborate with Domain Leaders and Staff Engineers to deliver scalable data solutions on Databricks and Unity Catalog, shaping data contracts and governed data products for analytics, ML, and AI.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, or Engineering.
• Expert-level experience with software development design and development and with relevant domain specific skills.
• Experience with Spark on Databricks, Python, Scala, SQL, and Snowflake.
• Experience with ETL and ELT data pipelines, including batch and event-driven patterns.
• Experience in data modeling.

Responsibilities

• Own technical direction for cross-domain data initiatives from initial ambiguity through production and lifecycle support.
• Define enterprise data engineering standards, patterns, and reference architectures to reduce cost and risk.
• Lead architecture for semantic layers, data contracts, and governed data products supporting analytics and ML.
• Mentor Staff/Senior Engineers and review high-complexity or cross-domain work.
