Job summary

UL Standards & Engagement is seeking a Senior Data Engineer in a hybrid setup based in Raleigh-Durham, NC or Evanston, IL. The role focuses on designing scalable data infrastructure to support analytics, ML, and AI capabilities across the enterprise.

You will collaborate with leaders, data scientists, and engineers to mature data strategy, governance, and retrieval systems, enabling informed decision-making while advancing safety and sustainability goals.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable data architectures, platforms, and pipelines supporting standards development, research, analytics, reporting, and AI initiatives.
  • Lead collection, integration, and management of complex datasets from diverse sources including APIs, XML/HTML standards content, and databases.
  • Develop and optimize enterprise ETL/ELT processes to ensure data accuracy, consistency, availability, and performance.
  • Architect data models, metadata frameworks, and data quality controls for reporting and machine learning.
  • Design and deploy production-grade RAG infrastructure including document ingestion, chunking, embeddings, vector storage, and retrieval strategies.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and improve data platform performance, reliability, and scalability.
