Job summary

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in Alexandria, VA is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to design and maintain data pipelines, enable AI-assisted analytics, and deliver reliability dashboards for engineering and maintenance teams.

You will work with telematics data, CMMS integration, and BI tools such as Power BI and Tableau to surface early signs of degradation and improve asset reliability. On-site role, with 7x24 readiness to support critical operations.

Qualifications

  • Seven years of progressive experience in engineering, reliability, maintenance, data analytics, or related fields.
  • Minimum 2 years of ETL experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, automate, and maintain ETL data workflows from telematic systems using Microsoft Fabric Data Factory and Python.
  • Monitor real-time and historical condition monitoring and telematic data.
  • Diagnose and resolve workflow issues and address data performance challenges to improve data availability.
  • Design AI-assisted data transformations, semantic models, and Power BI reports to support operational decisions and surface early signs of degradation.
  • Build and maintain large-scale relational databases supporting ETL processes and data quality.
  • Lead integration of telematics data with CMMS for automated alerts and maintenance records.
  • Develop predictive maintenance strategies and reliability model alignment.
  • Analyze equipment health indicators like vibration, temperature, pressure, and fault codes for anomaly detection.
  • Collaborate with reliability engineers and IT to maintain CI/CD for condition monitoring.
  • Develop and monitor KPIs and dashboards for system health and performance.
  • Perform RCA on failures and near-misses; propose improvements.
  • Train peers and end users on monitoring tools.

Job description

Work onsite in Alexandria, VA with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, supporting telematics-enabled predictive and condition monitoring that helps reduce unplanned downtime. In this Senior Data Engineer role, you will design and maintain data pipelines, build reliability-focused reporting and BI, and help turn asset health signals into actionable insights for engineering and maintenance teams.

What you’ll do
  • Develop, automate, and maintain ETL data workflows from telematic systems using Microsoft Fabric Data Factory and Python.
  • Organize and deploy data management systems to monitor real-time and historical condition monitoring and telematic data.
  • Diagnose and resolve workflow issues, and proactively address data performance challenges to improve data availability and minimize downtime.
  • Design and develop AI-assisted data transformations, semantic models, and Power BI reports to support operational decisions and surface early signs of component degradation or failure.
  • Build and maintain large-scale relational databases that support ETL processes and ensure data quality and integrity.
  • Lead integration of telematics data with enterprise computerized maintenance management systems to enable automated alerts and creation of maintenance repair records.
  • Develop and refine predictive maintenance strategies, including thresholds and reliability model alignment.
  • Analyze equipment health indicators such as vibration, temperature, pressure, and fault codes to detect abnormal trends.
  • Collaborate with reliability engineers, asset engineers, maintenance teams, and IT to maintain continuous integration and operations for condition monitoring.
  • Develop and monitor KPIs related to asset health and condition monitoring program compliance, and maintain documentation, reports, and dashboards for system health and performance.
  • Evaluate telematics data against established thresholds, failure modes, and reliability models, including performing root cause analysis (RCA) on failures and near-misses.
  • Recommend strategies to improve data reliability, efficiency, and quality.
  • Train peers and end users on monitoring tools and capabilities you develop.
  • Research and provide feedback on condition monitoring technologies and predictive maintenance tools, including opportunities to incorporate them into existing equipment.
  • Follow and promote awareness of safety policies and procedures, including reporting safety concerns consistent with the Agency Safety Plan, other regulatory requirements within the Safety Management System, and just culture principles.
What you bring
  • Knowledge of how telematic systems can be leveraged to improve reliability.
  • Knowledge and understanding of at least one programming language (such as SQL, Informatica, or Python).
  • Knowledge of using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to analyze, query, and collect maintenance history.
  • Strong ability to manipulate large data sets using data analysis tools including Microsoft Excel, Tableau, or Power BI.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to convey high-level technical concepts to non-experts and business leaders.
  • Ability to develop and present reports, findings, analysis, and recommendations to different audiences within the Authority.
  • Ability to translate business priorities into clear plans, delivery roadmaps, and measurable outcomes.
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage multiple responsibilities, and organize/summarize large data sets into key findings.
  • Ability to be available 24 hours, 7 days a week.
Minimum experience and education
  • Experience: Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience in engineering, reliability, maintenance, data science, data analytics, and/or related technical fields. Minimum 2 years of experience with ETL (extract, transform, load) processes.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Reliability, Electrical, Mechanical, or related engineering field (i.e., Data Science). In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, a High School Diploma or GED plus four (4) years of experience in an electrical, mechanical maintenance role or data analytics, in addition to the experience stated above, will be considered.

  • Experience with mechanical/engineering systems.
