Job summary

OpenAI seeks a Physical Network & Structured Cabling Engineer to own the design, implementation, and QA of cabling and network infrastructure across its global data center footprint. This role bridges design, construction, and operations to ensure performance, reliability, and scalability.

You will lead design reviews, coordinate with vendors, and develop installation guidelines while ensuring operational readiness and documentation accuracy. Travel to global sites is required.

Qualifications

• 10+ years designing and delivering physical network infrastructure for large-scale data centers.
• Strong understanding of data center topologies, optical connectivity, transceivers, and loss budgets.
• Experience with ANSI/TIA, BICSI standards.
• Ability to coordinate with cross-functional teams and external vendors.
• Proficiency in interpreting drawings, cable schedules, and documentation management.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
• Willingness to travel frequently to global data center sites.

Responsibilities

• Design and specify physical network infrastructure across data center campuses.
• Develop standards and reference designs for structured cabling deployments.
• Translate architectures into scalable physical designs and capacity plans.
• Lead design reviews and coordinate with other disciplines; inspect and turnover cabling systems.
• Troubleshoot issues during build, commissioning, and handover.
• Maintain design documentation including drawings, port maps, BOMs, and labels.
• Provide feedback to drive continuous improvement of standards.
