Job summary

DigitalOcean is seeking a Senior Data Center Engineer to join our on-site data center team in Atlanta. You will own hardware deployment, rack and cabling, and day-to-day fault diagnosis across Linux-based infrastructure, with travel to remote sites as needed.

You’ll work with a fast-growing, collaborative team, rotating on-call, and have opportunities to grow skills in GPU hardware, OS internals, and data center design.

Qualifications

  • Experience maintaining and growing physical server and networking gear.
  • Ability to replace drives, deploy racks, and manage data center hardware.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (10–15%).
  • Strong knowledge of Linux and shell scripting.
  • Excellent problem solving and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy and maintain data center infrastructure including servers, racks, and cabling.
  • Diagnose hardware issues and perform upgrades and rebuilds.
  • Coordinate remote work requests and asset inventory.
  • Handle vendor RMAs and shipping logistics.
  • Support on-site data centers and travel as needed.

Our amazing Data Center team is responsible for maintaining and growing the physical infrastructure of the DigitalOcean cloud, past, present and future. They own everything related to the physical servers and networking gear that enables our company, and our customers to scale. As a Senior Data Center Engineer at DigitalOcean, you will join a dynamic team dedicated to revolutionizing cloud computing. Day to day duties may include everything from replacing a faulty drive in one of our servers, to flying overseas to set up a brand new Data Center from scratch. In exchange for your expertise and enthusiastic interest in DigitalOcean, we can offer you a role on a fast growing, and collaborative team where you'll be given regular opportunities to hone your skills and learn new ones.

This position requires you to be onsite at our data center. This is an onsite position that requires you to support our data centers and the surrounding.

What You’ll Do
  • Deploying and maintaining Data Center infrastructureRacking, stacking and wiring servers, power distribution units, and switchesInstalling servers, switches, routers, and storage hardware
  • Submitting RMA to equipment manufacturers and shipping and receiving gear to and from remote locations and vendors
  • Submitting and tracking remote work requests and managing server and component inventory
  • Diagnosing and repairing hardware and performing upgrades, integrations, rebuilds and other projects as needed
  • Debugging network, hardware, and Linux OS related issues
  • Inventory and asset management
What You’ll Add To DigitalOcean
  • Proficient understanding in data center power and cooling design and architecture to help ensure new data center spaces, cages and suites are designed as per operational standards.
  • Experience deploying and troubleshooting GPU Hardware
  • Strong understanding of operating systems (OS) such as Linux; proficient with bash scripting.
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure hardware deployment and troubleshooting skills in networking, hardware, and Linux OS related issues
  • Strong understanding in data center cabling plans and best practices
  • Able to evaluate and discuss data center events and/or incidents, leveraging data to drive improvements, while taking action and ensuring timely resolution and closure
  • A strong desire and aptitude for solving problems and performing deep technical dives to resolve issues quickly and efficiently
  • Ability to update, review and approve operational documentation and procedures
  • Experience developing and standardizing operational framework that drive improvement
  • Can assist with budgetary and planning requirements for future projects and initiatives
  • Ability to create and define key performance metrics to help drive efficiency
  • Ability to operate and navigate effectively through ambiguity
  • Willingness to participate in an on‑call rotation
  • A valid driver’s license (must be comfortable with driving)
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally (10% - 15% travel)
  • Ability to be on your feet all dayAbility to lift objects up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to train and develop other junior engineers
Compensation Range
  • $105,600 - $132,000

You may qualify for a bonus in addition to base salary; bonus amounts are determined based on company and individual performance.
