Job summary

OpenAI is seeking a senior, hands-on Data Center Infrastructure Architect to design and optimize the physical infrastructure for large-scale AI deployments. The role spans data center architecture, electrical/mechanical systems, high-density compute, and digital modeling.

You will use simulation and digital twins to evaluate designs and drive efficiency, reliability, and cost improvements. The ideal candidate moves between first-principles analysis, facility design, modeling, and real-world

Qualifications

Experience designing or optimizing hyperscale data centers or equivalent facilities.
Broad knowledge of electrical and mechanical data center systems.
Experience with system-level design decisions across multiple disciplines.
Experience applying simulation, digital twin, or physics-based modeling to physical infra.
Strong understanding of PUE, WUE, performance metrics, and TCO.
Experience translating telemetry into design improvements.
Ability to handle complex tradeoffs in performance, cost, and deployability.
Proven ability to lead technical work in dynamic environments.
Excellent written and verbal communication for customers and cross-functional teams.
Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline.

Responsibilities

Define system-level architectures for high-density AI data centers across power, cooling, IT, controls, and facilities.
Develop digital twins and computational models to simulate data center behavior under varying workloads.
Use design data to improve efficiency metrics and optimize capacity, reliability, water use, cost, and deployment schedules.
Evaluate tradeoffs across power topology, cooling, rack density, redundancy, controls, and maintainability.
Translate AI hardware needs into practical facility and rack architectures.
Establish reference architectures, modeling standards, and validation methodologies for deployments.
Collaborate with software, hardware, controls, and operations teams to connect models with real infrastructure.
Incorporate telemetry from BMS/SCADA/DCIM into modeling workflows.
Lead technical reviews and propose data-driven design changes.
Adapt reference solutions to site constraints while preserving performance and efficiency.
Support pilots, commissioning, performance testing, and post-deployment validation.
Help shape the technical roadmap for Industrial Compute infrastructure products.
