The Health Care Cost Institute (HCCI) is an independent, non-profit research institute located in Washington, D.C. with a mission to use data and analytics to improve the US health care system. Employers, policymakers, and researchers rely on HCCI’s claims data to better understand the health care system, evaluate existing and emerging coverage and payment policies, and assess health care quality. Our multi-disciplinary team produces timely, policy-relevant reports and analyses in an academic but fast-paced environment.

We are looking for a Senior Data Analyst, Data Architecture to join our dynamic team working to advance HCCI’s mission. This position is ideal for candidates with extensive experience working with health care claims data and who are seeking opportunities to conduct high-profile analytics. The Senior Data Analyst, Data Architecture will support HCCI’s efforts to provide employers and other stakeholders information to help them make informed decisions to improve the value of health care.

The Senior Data Analyst, Data Architecture will:
  • Work with HCCI’s leadership to develop and implement strategic planning of dataset assets and infrastructure management.
  • Own data quality management across multiple inbound data feeds into a claims data warehouse, including data flow monitoring and validation; work with data submitters to resolve data integrity issues.
  • Design, build, and maintain data marts from a claims data warehouse to support downstream reporting and analytic needs.
  • Document data architecture, data lineage, and data quality rules for the claims data warehouse and downstream data marts.
  • Partner with HCCI’s data warehouse vendor to maintain data quality standards, controls, and monitor flow across the data pipeline.
  • Work with HCCI’s data warehouse vendor to evaluate and recommend improvements to data architecture and warehouse design to improve reliability and scalability.
  • Communicate and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including other analysts, data visualization specialists, and senior leaders, to ensure valid and interpretable results for measures in downstream reporting.
  • Develop, implement and refine data quality reports for internal audiences and external stakeholders.
  • Support HCCI’s organizational operational activities as needed (e.g. help write proposals, liaise with external data users, etc.)
In our candidates, we look for:
  • At least 10 years of experience working with or analyzing data, with at least 5 years of experience managing data quality across multiple data feeds in a data warehouse or similarly large relational data environment; experience with claims data warehouses preferred.
  • Proven ability to design and build data marts in a data warehouse to support downstream reporting.
  • Strong SQL and relational database design skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex data integrity issues.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, health informatics, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
  • Experience with ETL/ETL tools, data warehousing platforms, and data quality/monitoring frameworks.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing, especially about quantitative findings for non-quantitative audiences.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects at once.
  • A proactive, detail-oriented problem solver with a collegial approach who can serve as a resource for other team members.
  • Experience analyzing claims data and generating reports for organizational leadership.

This is a full-time, exempt, position with an annual salary range from $145,000 to $175,000, depending on experience. HCCI also provides competitive benefits to full-time employees, including 403B retirement with employer contribution and health insurance.

This position is remote eligible, with occasional travel to the Washington, DC office. Preference will be given to applicants located in states where HCCI is currently registered as an employer – Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts and Minnesota. Regardless of work location, this position requires East Coast hours.
