Job description

Senior Cyber Systems Engineer

US-MD-Annapolis Junction | US-DC-Washington

Responsibilities

Peraton is seeking a Senior Cyber Systems Engineer to support our customer onsite in Annapolis Junction, MD or onsite in Washington D.C.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Secure Requirements & Architecture: Analyze user's requirements, concept of operations documents, and high-level architectures to develop secure system requirements specifications. Develop system architecture and design documentation that maps directly to JSIG security controls and secure-by-design principles.
  • System Development & Technical Control Integration: Provide technical direction for the engineering, interfacing, integration, and testing of complex hardware/software systems. This includes requirements elicitation, functional allocation, and the technical implementation of JSIG controls (e.g., continuous monitoring, identity and access management, secure virtualization, hardened OS baselines) across VMware, Linux, and Windows environments.
  • Engineering Execution: Analyze system requirements and actively participate in secure design and development activities. Formulate security-focused requirements, advise on alternative approaches, and conduct feasibility studies for integrating new cyber tools that satisfy JSIG mandates.
  • Lifecycle Management: Guide system development and implementation planning through the assessment or preparation of system engineering management plans (SEMPs), and system integration and test plans (SITPs) that technically validate JSIG security controls. Incorporate new secure plans, designs, and systems into ongoing operations.
  • Technical Coordination: Take responsibility for the technical integrity of assigned cyber engineering work and deliverables. Communicate effectively with program personnel, government stakeholders, and other engineers regarding technical security considerations, JSIG integration issues, or conflicts.
  • Architecture Standards: Assist in developing operational views, technical standards views, and system/services views for architectures using applicable DoDAF standards, ensuring cyber survivability and JSIG data flow requirements are accurately mapped. Develop comprehensive, secure SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture) solutions.
  • Trade Analyses & AoA: Conduct end-to-end system trade analyses to optimize operations over the lifecycle, balancing non-functional system performance with the robust security posture dictated by the JSIG. As a participant within an Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) effort, recommend a preferred solution based on technology/security limitations, environmental impact, and life-cycle costs.
  • Risk & Design Alternatives: Develop system design alternatives that consider life cycle cost, reuse, complexity, technical risk, and system expansion. Develop alternative courses of action, workarounds, and fall-back positions for assigned cyber/technical risks, monitoring them at appropriate milestones.
  • Configuration & Quality Control: Ensure effective, periodic review and control of the evolving configuration of systems (hardware, software, and infrastructure-as-code) to prevent security drift and maintain JSIG continuous monitoring baselines. Serve as a technical member of the Configuration Control Board (CCB) or Engineering Review Board (ERB) to evaluate the security impact of proposed changes.
  • Simulation & Prototyping: Use validated models, simulations, and prototyping (e.g., vulnerability simulation or sandbox testing) to mitigate technical risk and reduce the cost of secure system development.
Qualifications
  • Requires a Top Secret Clearance with SCI Eligibility
  • Requires a min of 8 years with BS/BA, Min 6 years with MS/MA; an additional 4 years of relevant Cyber/Systems Engineering experience may be considered in lieu of degree
  • Requires Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Cyber Security, Engineering Science, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of Systems/Cyber Engineering experience on programs of similar scope, type, and complexity, with a focus on implementing technical security controls and secure architecture.
  • Security Frameworks: Strong familiarity with the Joint SAP Implementation Guide (JSIG), DoD Risk Management Framework (RMF), and implementing technical security controls within a Special Access Program (SAP) or highly classified environment.
  • Certifications:
    • Must possess a DoD 8570/8140 IAT Level II or III (e.g., Security+ CE, CySA+, or CASP+) or IASAE Level II certification prior to starting.
    • Hands-on technical certifications (e.g., VMware VCP, Red Hat RHCSA, Cisco CCNA/CCNP Security) are highly desired to support the technical engineering environment.
