Job description

We are seeking a Sr. Controls Engineer to support a leading national industrial automation company in Albuquerque.

The Sr. Controls Engineer is a customer-facing technical leader who drives automation success from concept to commissioning. This role will lead engineering teams to define requirements, develop smart specifications, and deliver robust automation solutions through implementation, testing, commissioning, and qualification.

This is a key leadership position within the business unit, demanding sharp problem-solving skills, strong people leadership, and a business-minded approach to efficiency and execution. Just as important, you’ll build trusted customer partnerships—and measure success by earning repeat work from both new and existing clients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and deliver innovative automation solutions, working independently or leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Serve as technical lead to conceptualize, specify, and implement control systems for industrial processes and machinery that meet customer requirements.
  • Develop complete control system architectures, including component selection, system layouts, schematic diagrams, and comprehensive documentation.
  • Program and configure industrial control platforms including PLCs, DCS, and RTUs using languages such as Ladder Logic, Sequential Function Chart (SFC), Structured Text, and related standards.
  • Design and develop HMI/SCADA systems, including visualization, alarming, data archiving, and historical reporting.
  • Develop and integrate databases for system data storage, analysis, and visualization (SQL preferred); utilize tools such as VBA and .NET where applicable.
  • Implement, test, commission, and qualify control systems at client facilities, providing hands‑on support through project closeout.
  • Design and implement industrial networking solutions for larger systems, including fiber, wired, and wireless architectures using protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, and related technologies.
  • Lead project execution activities including scope definition, work breakdown structures, budgeting, scheduling, task prioritization, and resource coordination.
  • Track and report project progress, labor, and financial performance; identify risks early and drive issue resolution.
  • Oversee daily project activities for automation projects up to $1M, with responsibility for overall project profitability.
  • Lead, mentor, and support lower‑level engineers and technicians; foster technical growth and project success.
  • Participate in customer meetings and internal project status reviews; communicate technical and project updates clearly.
  • Act as Project Manager on smaller projects when required.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical/Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Computer Science

Required:

  • 10 or more years of experience in control engineering.
  • Proven ability to design and support 3rd‑party, web‑based data integrations for system monitoring, diagnostics, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience developing standardized work processes to automate template and instance development within SCADA/DCS platforms (e.g., System Platform).
  • Demonstrated technical leadership in establishing and enforcing design standards for graphics, alarming, and system scalability.
  • Strong proficiency with data and visualization technologies, including SQL, .NET, Power BI, Grafana, and APIs.
  • Deep expertise with PLC hardware and software platforms, including Rockwell Automation, Siemens, and Modicon.
  • Strong proficiency with leading HMI/SCADA platforms such as ICONICS Genesis64, Wonderware ArchestrA System Platform, GE CIMPLICITY, GE iFIX, Rockwell FactoryTalk View, Schneider, and Siemens.
  • In‑depth knowledge of DCS platforms, including Emerson DeltaV and comparable systems.
  • Experience delivering automation solutions in regulated and industrial environments, including Semiconductor manufacturing, Life Sciences, Building Automation, Food & Beverage, Oil & Gas, and Mining.
  • Experience designing electrical schematics, including 480VAC power distribution, control panels, and applicable NEC references.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD for control panel and electrical documentation (preferred).
  • Proven experience leading teams of engineers and technicians to deliver control system solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop junior engineers.
  • Strong hands‑on troubleshooting skills for field devices, instrumentation, and control equipment.
  • Experience with job estimating, including scope definition, effort forecasting, and cost considerations.
  • Ability to provide professional references, preferably including a subordinate, a peer, and a manager.

Preferred:

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for creating electrical schematics, control panel layouts, and system documentation.
  • Experience designing and deploying industrial networking solutions for large‑scale control systems, including fiber, wired, and wireless architectures connecting control system components and instrumentation.
