Job summary

Simpson Gumpertz & Heger in Oakland, CA seeks a Senior Consulting Engineer/Architect to manage small‑to‑mid sized projects, lead design and investigation efforts, and mentor junior staff. The role focuses on building enclosure waterproofing, facade assessments, and remediation design across diverse projects.

Ideal candidates hold a PE or RA license with 10+ years of relevant experience, excellent communication, and the ability to travel to remote sites.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Architectural Engineering with 10+ years of experience.
  • P.E. or Registered Architect license required.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Revit, and Microsoft Office preferred.
  • Experience in curtain wall design, historic preservation, roofing/waterproofing consulting, and public speaking is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Act as project manager for small to medium-sized projects; oversee design, investigation, and repair design for existing buildings.
  • Perform peer reviews of plans and specifications; draft sketches to convey concepts.
  • Provide site visits and respond to RFIs during construction administration.
  • Conduct water leakage testing of roofing and waterproofing systems and building components.
  • Observe destructive testing of envelope components and document results.
  • Coordinate site investigations and develop remediation recommendations.
  • Author investigation and remediation reports.
  • Design remedial repairs for building systems and draft bidding drawings.
  • Conduct facade surveys and write reports per city ordinances.
  • Provide litigation support for related projects and training to junior staff.
  • Manage multiple projects, contracts, budgets, and staffing; liaise with clients.

Senior Consulting Engineer/Architect

The Senior Consulting Engineer/Architect will act as project manager for small to medium‑sized projects. Responsibilities include new design consultation, evaluation, investigation, and repair design for existing buildings. The individual will manage complex standalone projects or multiple concurrent projects, mentor junior staff, foster strong client relationships, and remain professionally active within their area of technical expertise.

What You’ll Do
  • Consult on building enclosure waterproofing design and construction to contractors, architects, developers, building owners, property managers, and construction managers.
  • Perform peer reviews of architect’s plans and specifications. Draft sketches to convey design concepts or sequencing clarifications.
  • Provide site visits and respond to submittals and requests for information during the construction administration phase of projects.
  • Perform water leakage testing of roofing and waterproofing systems, windows, curtain walls, and other building components.
  • Observe and document localized destructive testing of all envelope components including wall claddings, windows, roofs, skylights, flooring, plaza waterproofing and below‑grade elements.
  • Assist partners in coordinating and managing site investigations to verify building enclosure as‑built conditions and develop remediation recommendations.
  • Author reports to convey investigation findings and recommendations.
  • Design remedial repairs to existing building systems, including walls, roofs, windows, curtain wall systems, and plaza waterproofing systems. Draft drawings and specifications suitable for bidding and construction.
  • Perform facade surveys and write reports in accordance with the city of San Francisco’s Facade Ordinance.
  • Provide litigation support for projects involving the issues discussed above.
  • Provide on‑the‑job training and mentoring to entry‑level and junior staff.
  • Manage multiple projects, including coordinating contracts and additional service requests, reviewing invoices, and evaluating project staffing and budgets.
  • Remain professionally active in local or national industry groups, prepare publications, and give internal and external presentations.
What You’ll Need
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Architectural Engineering plus over 10 years of experience with an architectural/engineering firm, construction firm, or construction management firm; or a Master’s Degree plus over 7 years of industry experience.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Registered Architect (R.A.) license required.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong computer graphics skills (experience with Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Revit, and Microsoft suite are desired).
  • Experience in any of the following areas is a plus: curtain wall design, historic preservation, roofing/waterproofing consulting, and public speaking.
  • Ability to travel to remote job sites not accessible by public transportation, and if applicable, an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report.

Compensation

Base salary range is a good faith estimate pursuant to equal pay and pay transparency laws. The actual salary offered will be based on several factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and work location.

Base salary is part of SGH’s industry‑leading total compensation package, which includes pay for extra hours worked, an annual discretionary bonus program, generous paid time off, and health and wellness benefits with a special emphasis on substantial SGH contributions to medical insurance premiums and SGH’s Profit Sharing & 401(k) Plan.

This position is eligible for a $7,500 sign‑on bonus.
