Job summary

Three Notch Group is seeking a Senior Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Technician to join our Charlotte, North Carolina team. You will perform field observations, testing, inspections, and documentation to help ensure projects meet plans and codes.

Ideal candidates have a concrete blend of technical experience, safety focus, and the ability to work independently while coordinating with project managers, engineers, and clients.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher with related experience; or HS diploma with extensive related experience.
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record.
  • Solid written and verbal communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently under limited supervision and in a project team.
  • Familiarity with construction inspection and field testing procedures.
  • Experience with MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Adobe Acrobat.
  • Industry certifications such as ACI, NICET, ICC, or DOT are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Read plans, geotechnical reports, and specs to guide testing.
  • Perform field observations, testing and inspections on diverse construction projects.
  • Monitor contractor activities and document conformance with plans and standards.
  • Conduct testing for concrete, asphalt, soils, and related materials.
  • Collect samples and prepare test reports and summaries.

  • Fabricate concrete cylinders and perform slump, air, temp, and unit weight tests.
  • Maintain equipment, vehicles, and site supplies in safe condition.

Position Overview

Three Notch Group is seeking a motivated Senior Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Technician to join our growing team in Charlotte, North Carolina. This role helps ensure the quality and compliance of constructed projects through field observations, materials testing, inspections, contractor monitoring, and accurate documentation.

Working under limited supervision, the Senior CMT Technician will assist the Construction Project Manager on projects of moderate size and complexity and perform quality-control and contract-administration functions. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, dependable, technically experienced, and able to work independently while communicating effectively with contractors, engineers, project managers, and clients.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Read and interpret construction plans, geotechnical reports, project specifications, and applicable building codes.
  • Perform field observations, testing, and inspections on commercial, industrial, institutional, roadway, and infrastructure construction projects throughout the region.
  • Monitor contractor activities and document conformance with project plans, specifications, geotechnical recommendations, and applicable standards.
  • Perform construction materials testing and special inspections during site grading and earthwork, structural fill placement and compaction, foundation bearing evaluations, cast-in-place concrete placement, reinforcing steel installation, and asphalt placement.
  • Collect field samples and perform testing in accordance with ASTM, ACI, ICC, DOT, and project-specific requirements.
  • Operate nuclear density gauges in accordance with company procedures, safety protocols, and applicable certification requirements.
  • Use concrete testing equipment to perform slump, air content, temperature, and unit weight testing and to fabricate concrete cylinders in accordance with ASTM and ACI standards.
  • Use other field testing equipment and devices in accordance with company procedures and applicable standards.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and timely field reports, daily observation reports, test summaries, and inspection documentation using company software and reporting systems.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, project managers, engineers, and clients regarding construction progress, testing and inspection results, non-compliant conditions, field observations, and recommendations.
  • Maintain testing equipment, company vehicles, and field supplies in safe and proper working condition.
  • Follow company safety procedures and maintain a safe working environment on active construction sites.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and travel to project sites as needed throughout the service area.
What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means consistently delivering accurate testing, inspections, observations, and documentation that help ensure construction work conforms to project plans, specifications, geotechnical recommendations, applicable codes, and industry standards. The Senior CMT Technician will independently manage assigned field activities on moderately complex projects, communicate findings clearly, and provide dependable support to the Construction Project Manager and project team.

The successful candidate will identify and document non-compliant conditions, maintain required certifications, prioritize safety, care for company equipment and vehicles, and complete timely, professional reports. They will demonstrate sound technical judgment, accountability, organization, and the ability to build effective working relationships with contractors, engineers, project managers, and clients.

  • Bachelor’s degree with zero to two years of related experience, or high school diploma or GED with eight to 10 years of related experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently under limited supervision and collaborate effectively as part of a project team.
  • Familiarity with construction inspection and field testing procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Industry certifications such as ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I, NICET, ICC, or DOT certifications.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry materials and testing equipment in accordance with company safety policies and OSHA guidelines, including routinely lifting up to 50 pounds independently and heavier items with team assistance or mechanical aids.
  • Ability to move and handle construction materials, testing equipment, concrete samples, and soil samples using proper lifting techniques and approved assistance devices when necessary.
  • Ability to perform frequent bending, hammering, lifting, kneeling, crouching, stooping, crawling, climbing, balancing, and other repetitive physical movements.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods while performing field observations and testing activities.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and travel to project sites as needed.
