Job summary

Stantec is seeking a Construction Inspector to join our Water/Basics team in Cincinnati, OH. You will inspect contractor work, maintain records, review submittals and RFIs, and support safe field operations on complex tunnel projects.

The role emphasizes coordination with engineers, testing agencies, and clients while adhering to QA/QC standards. Qualified candidates will have at least five years of heavy construction experience, an accredited Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology

Your Key Responsibilities
  • You’ll inspect and monitor construction contractor work and prepare daily inspection reports documenting labor, equipment, materials, work activities, safety observations, and construction progress.

  • You’ll review contractor reports and maintain accurate project records and photographic documentation.

  • You’ll review and provide input on field-related submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs), plan clarifications, geotechnical information, inspection and test plans, and CPM schedules.

  • You’ll monitor contractor receipt inspection of materials arriving on-site and observe off-site fabrication, production, and testing activities as required.

  • You’ll monitor construction progress for compliance with contract documents, approved submittals, plans, specifications, safety standards, and agency requirements.

  • You’ll inspect and verify contractor compliance as detailed in the applicable procedural manual(s) and the Construction and Materials Specifications.

  • You’ll identify, document, and communicate non-conforming work and verify implementation of corrective actions.

  • You’ll witness field and laboratory testing activities and verify compliance with approved Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) programs.

  • You’ll observe tunneling operations including shaft construction, excavation, TBM operations, microtunneling, grouting, ground support installation, lining installation, and other trenchless construction activities.

  • You’ll coordinate daily with the Construction Manager, Resident Project Representative, Owner, Engineer, Contractor, and testing agencies regarding field activities and issues.

  • You’ll assist in maintaining, supporting, and promoting a safe work environment while complying with applicable safety policies and procedures.

  • You’ll utilize Agency/Client Project Management Information Systems (PMIS) and other electronic systems to prepare inspection reports and maintain project documentation.

  • You’ll assist with authorized Force Account change order work performed on a time and materials basis, documenting the use of contractor labor, equipment and materials.

  • You’ll review the monthly progress pay estimate submitting by the construction contractor to verify requests for payment of materials, percent complete and earned value.

  • You prepare and monitor a project punch list for deficient or uncompleted work by the construction contractor.

Your Capabilities And Credentials:
  • You’re able to work in a manner that ensures personal safety as well as the safety of fellow employees by following project and company health and safety guidelines and policies.

  • You understand and interpret contract documents and test plan for a designated Work Package for a specific construction activity.

  • You’re able to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agency.

Education & Experience
  • Minimum of five (5) years of construction project inspection experience required.

  • Successful completion of Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology or Construction Management is preferred.

  • Experience on at least two tunnel projects, including trenchless tunneling experience.

  • At least ten years of recent experience in heavy construction, with at least five years of tunnel inspection experience on large and complex engineering/construction projects.

  • Knowledge of tunnel construction methods, including TBM, microtunneling, pipe jacking, shaft construction, grouting operations, and ground support systems.

  • Ability to interpret plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, contract documents, shop drawings, and construction schedules.

  • Experience reviewing contractor submittals, RFIs, inspection and test plans, and quality control documentation.

  • Experience performing QA/QC inspections, documenting non-conforming work, and verifying corrective actions.

  • Knowledge of construction-related processes and industry practices.

  • Ability to coordinate effectively with contractors, engineers, testing agencies, and client representatives.

  • Preferred current First Aid and CPR training from a provider recognized by OSHA.

  • Preferred OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification.

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment such as a respirator and meet physical demands including walking, standing, lifting up to 40 lbs., climbing ladders, bending, squatting, and crawling in confined spaces.

  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, and Outlook. Preferred knowledge of Bluebeam Revu, Visio, AutoCAD, and construction document management systems.

  • Excellent written, verbal communication, and organizational skills.

  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites as required.

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
