Job summary

The Inland Empire Regional Composting Facility seeks a Senior Compost Operations and Maintenance Technician to lead daily operations and maintenance. You will supervise staff, train crews, and ensure safe, efficient production of high‑quality compost, reporting to the Compost Facility Supervisor.

Responsibilities include coordinating maintenance planning, monitoring SCADA processes, maintaining records, and driving preventive and predictive programs while prioritizing safety and regulatory

Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED required.
  • At least three years of journey-level ops/maintenance at a composting facility or with construction equipment.
  • Experience in a public agency preferred.

  • Provide direction, training, and technical guidance to operations and maintenance crews.
  • Oversee maintenance planning and repair projects, assign and monitor work orders.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and safety standards.
  • Operate and monitor SCADA-controlled processes.
  • Maintain detailed operational and maintenance records.
  • Implement predictive and preventive maintenance programs and equipment reliability initiatives.
  • Manage air quality and continually optimize facility operations.

Overview

Senior Compost Operations and Maintenance Technician. Lead operations and maintenance staff at the Inland Empire Regional Composting Facility. Report to the Compost Facility Supervisor and ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant production of high‑quality compost.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate daily operations and maintenance of the indoor composting facility.
  • Provide direction, training, and technical guidance to operations and maintenance crews.
  • Oversee maintenance planning and repair projects, assign and monitor work orders.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and safety standards.
  • Operate and monitor SCADA‑controlled processes.
  • Maintain detailed operational and maintenance records.
  • Implement predictive and preventive maintenance programs and equipment reliability initiatives.
  • Manage air quality and continually optimize facility operations.
Education, Training and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • At least three years of progressively responsible journey‑level operations or maintenance experience at a composting facility or with construction‑related tools and equipment, including a front loader.
  • Experience in a public agency is preferred.
Licenses, Certificates and Special Requirements
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license and ability to maintain insurability under the agency’s vehicle insurance program.
  • Weigh Master Certificate required within six months of appointment and must be maintained during employment.
  • Level 1 Certification in vibration analysis, lube oil, and ultrasonic required within 18 months of appointment.
  • Level 2 Certification in vibration analysis, lube oil, and ultrasonic highly desired.
  • Certified Reliability Leader (CRL) Certification highly desired.
Skills and Abilities
  • Lead by example in maintaining a safe work environment and enforcing safety procedures such as lockout/tagout, confined space entry, hazardous material handling, and PPE use.
  • Strong knowledge of composting facility operations, heavy equipment, SCADA systems, and process controls.
  • Experience coordinating preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities, including equipment inspections, troubleshooting, maintenance planning, and asset reliability initiatives.
  • Ability to prioritize work, adapt to changing operational needs, and provide leadership, training, and technical guidance while ensuring efficient and compliant facility operations.
Salary and Employment Terms
  • Salary range: PR 181.
  • FLSA status: Exempt.
  • Probationary period: 12 months.
