Position Title: Senior Communications Manager

Program/ Department: Administrative

Work location: Hybrid (2 days at YWFC Los Angeles weekly), with some travel

Classification: Full-time (1 FTE), Permanent

Reports to: Chief Communications & Fund Development Officer

Salary: $90,000 to $100,000

The Senior Communications Manager reports to the Chief Communications & Fund Development Officer and leads the day-to-day management and implementation of communications across Young Women’s Freedom Center (YWFC) and its projects Sister Warriors Freedom Coalition and Beloved Village, as well as Sister Warriors Action Fund.

Working closely with the Chief Communications & Fund Development Officer, the Senior Communications Manager translates organizational priorities and communications strategies into coordinated work plans, campaigns, content, and communications products. This role manages both the organization’s always-on communications and time-bound campaigns, ensuring that work is thoughtfully planned, successfully executed, and aligned across audiences, channels, and organizational projects.

The Senior Communications Manager supervises the Social Media and Communications Managers and provides clear direction, feedback, and support to strengthen the communications team’s performance. They also serve as a central communications partner to staff across the organization, gathering information, clarifying communications needs, managing requests and timelines, and ensuring that YWFC’s external communications are accurate, compelling, timely, and grounded in the organization’s mission, values, and voice.

The ideal candidate is an experienced communications professional and people manager who is both strategic and highly organized. They can move comfortably between planning and execution, manage multiple priorities without losing sight of details, and help turn complex programmatic, policy, and organizational information into accessible and engaging communications.

Key duties and responsibilities:
Communications Planning & Management
  • Manage the day-to-day implementation of communications strategies across YWFC, Sister Warriors, and Beloved Village.
  • Translate organizational priorities into clear communications plans, campaigns, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Manage the organization’s editorial calendar and coordinate content across websites, email, social media, events, fundraising, advocacy, and other communications channels.
  • Lead communications campaigns from planning through implementation and evaluation.
  • Manage communications requests and workflows, ensuring that projects remain organized, aligned, and on schedule.
Content & Brand
  • Write, edit, and oversee the development of newsletters, website content, campaign materials, reports, organizational announcements, talking points, press materials, and other external communications.
  • Ensure that communications are accurate, accessible, audience-centered, and consistent with the organization’s voice, values, messaging, and visual identity.
  • Work with staff and community members to identify stories, program updates, and impact information for external communications.
  • Uphold ethical, trauma-informed, and consent-based storytelling practices.
  • Coordinate external designers, photographers, videographers, consultants, and other communications vendors as needed.
Team & Cross-Organization Coordination
  • Supervise the Social Media and Communications Managers, including setting priorities, assigning work, reviewing content, providing feedback, and supporting professional development.
  • Serve as the primary day-to-day communications partner for teams across the organization.
  • Build clear and collaborative processes for gathering information, developing content, reviewing materials, and meeting communications deadlines.
  • Monitor communications performance and use data and audience feedback to strengthen future work.
  • Provide regular updates to the Chief Communications & Fund Development Officer on priorities, progress, results, and challenges.
Organizational Participation
  • Participate in organizational events, staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Respond to emails, messages, and other correspondence in a timely and professional manner.
  • Support additional communications and fundraising initiatives as directed by the Chief Communications & Fund Development Officer.
  • Ensure that the organization’s mission, vision, and guiding principles inform all aspects of the work.

Qualifications:
  • At least seven years of professional experience in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field.
  • Experience managing multiple brands, campaigns, or workstreams with competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Experience supervising staff or providing significant direction, feedback, and support to other communications professionals.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong project-management skills and demonstrated ability to move communications projects from strategy through successful execution.
  • Experience developing integrated content across digital, social media, email, web, print, and other communications channels.
  • Strong editorial judgment, attention to detail, and ability to communicate complex or sensitive issues clearly.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across teams and build strong working relationships with people from a range of backgrounds and roles.
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial, gender, economic, and social justice and to the leadership and self-determination of systems-impacted people.
  • Experience working in a communications, public relations, or creative agency environment is a plus.
