Job Title: Senior Cloud Migration Engineer/Architect (VMware to AWS) - AI & Automation
Position Type: Full-Time
Work Location: 100% Remote
Role Summary
We are seeking a Senior Cloud Migration Engineer (VMware to AWS) with expertise in AI to lead the architecture, execution, and optimization of our enterprise workload transitions. In this role, you will lead the transition of on-premises virtualized VMware environments (vSphere, ESXi, NSX, SAN/NAS) to AWS.
Beyond traditional lift-and-shift patterns, you will embed Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning tools (including Generative AI coding assistants, automated discovery/dependency analyzers, and predictive wave-planning models) to accelerate migration velocity, optimize cloud sizing, and minimize cutover downtime.
Key Responsibilities
Workload Assessment & AI-Powered Discovery
- Assess legacy VMware environments (vCenter, ESXi, clusters, storage, and networking topologies).
- Use AI-driven discovery platforms, AWS Application Discovery Service, and LLM-assisted code/dependency analyzers to map complex multi-tier application architectures and recommend the best 6R disposition strategy (Rehost, Replatform, Refactor, etc.).
- Leverage predictive analytics and AI-backed Optimization and Licensing Assessment (OLA) tools to model compute, memory, and license rightsizing across target AWS instances.
- Architect and implement AWS Landing Zones using AWS Control Tower, multi-account structures, transit gateways, Direct Connect, and VPC peering.
- Execute migrations utilizing native tools such as AWS Application Migration Service (MGN), AWS Database Migration Service (DMS), and VMware Cloud on AWS (VMC) where applicable.
- Design cutover runbooks, rollback strategies, and perform non-disruptive pilot waves through to final production cutovers.
AI & Automation Integration
- Build automated migration factories and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) pipelines using Terraform or AWS CloudFormation.
- Integrate AI coding tools (e.g., Amazon Q Developer, GitHub Copilot) to generate and refactor infrastructure scripts, automate sanity checks, and synthesize post-migration runbooks.
- Implement AIOps and automated observability via Amazon CloudWatch, AWS Systems Manager, and AI-assisted anomaly detection to validate workload health during hypercare.
Governance, Security, and Post-Migration Modernization
- Enforce cloud security guardrails, IAM least-privilege policies, encryption standards (KMS), and compliance frameworks (SOC2, HIPAA, or ISO).
- Guide application teams post-cutover toward cloud-native optimizations, such as containerization (Amazon ECS/EKS) and serverless patterns.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: 5+ years of hands-on infrastructure engineering experience, with at least 3 years focused on end-to-end migrations from on-premises VMware to AWS.
- VMware Expertise: Deep technical proficiency in VMware vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, vSAN, and NSX network virtualization.
- AWS Core Competency: Hands-on mastery of AWS services (VPC, EC2, EBS, S3, IAM, Route 53, Direct Connect, MGN, and DMS).
- AI & Machine Learning Application: Demonstrated experience applying AI tools to engineering workflows (e.g., using LLMs for script generation, infrastructure refactoring, automated runbook creation, or using AI-assisted workload analysis and dependency mapping).
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Strong scripting skills in Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, Python, or PowerShell/PowerCLI.
- Remote Collaboration: Proven track record of delivering complex infrastructure programs autonomously in a distributed/remote work setup.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional-level cloud credentials (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional, or AWS Certified Migration Specialty).
- Active VMware certifications (e.g., VCP-DCV or VCIX).
- Practical experience deploying or managing AI workloads in AWS (Amazon Bedrock, SageMaker) or using AI-augmented observability platforms (Datadog, Dynatrace Davis AI).
- Experience with enterprise containerization platforms (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS EKS).
