Job summary

Peraton is seeking a cleared Senior Cloud Engineer to design, deploy, and secure cloud infrastructure in a federal environment. You will automate provisioning, manage containers, and ensure compliance with NIST and DOE security standards.

The role requires collaboration with software developers, cybersecurity engineers, and government stakeholders to deliver scalable cloud solutions while maintaining detailed documentation and operation procedures.

Qualifications

  • 8 years of experience supporting enterprise IT infrastructure, with 3+ years in cloud engineering or cloud operations; degree or equivalent experience.
  • Experience designing and administering cloud environments in AWS/Azure/GCP.
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM/Bicep).
  • Experience with scripting and automation (PowerShell, Python, Bash).
  • Experience with DevSecOps and CI/CD tools (GitLab CI, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps).
  • Strong networking knowledge: DNS, VPNs, load balancing, routing, firewalls, and virtual networks.
  • Experience with Linux and Windows Server administration.
  • Knowledge of cloud security services (IAM, KMS, Security Groups, NSGs, CloudTrail, monitoring).
  • Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes.

Responsibilities
Position Overview

We are seeking a cleared, highly skilled Cloud Engineer to support a mission-critical program within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The ideal candidate will design, implement, secure, automate, and maintain cloud infrastructure supporting enterprise and mission systems. This role requires strong technical expertise in cloud technologies, infrastructure automation, cybersecurity best practices, and collaboration across engineering and operations teams.

The successful candidate will work in a secure, fast-paced environment supporting cloud modernization initiatives while ensuring compliance with federal security and operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, deploy, configure, and maintain secure cloud infrastructure in AWS, Microsoft Azure, and/or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Develop Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using tools such as Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, and/or Azure Resource Manager (ARM)/Bicep.
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning, application deployments, and operational workflows using CI/CD pipelines.
  • Implement and manage containerization technologies including Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Monitor cloud environments for performance, availability, capacity, and security.
  • Implement cloud security controls in accordance with NIST 800-53, DOE cybersecurity requirements, Zero Trust principles, and federal compliance standards.
  • Support identity and access management (IAM), network segmentation, encryption, logging, and auditing.
  • Troubleshoot infrastructure, networking, and application issues across hybrid cloud environments.
  • Collaborate with software developers, cybersecurity engineers, system administrators, and government stakeholders to deliver scalable cloud solutions.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, architecture diagrams, standard operating procedures, and configuration management records.
  • Participate in system upgrades, vulnerability remediation, disaster recovery planning, and continuity of operations activities.
  • Support Authority to Operate (ATO) processes and security assessments as required.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • 8 years of experience supporting enterprise IT infrastructure, including at least 3 years in cloud engineering or cloud operations with Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related discipline. Or 12 years of relevant experience with a High School diploma.
  • Experience designing and administering cloud environments in AWS, Azure, and/or GCP.
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM/Bicep).
  • Experience with scripting and automation using PowerShell, Python, Bash, and/or similar languages.
  • Experience with DevSecOps and CI/CD tools such as GitLab CI, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, and/or Azure DevOps.
  • Strong understanding of networking concepts including DNS, VPNs, load balancing, routing, firewalls, and virtual networking.
  • Experience with Linux and Windows Server administration.
  • Knowledge of cloud security services including IAM, Key Management Services (KMS), Security Groups, NSGs, CloudTrail, Azure Monitor, and/or equivalent technologies.
  • Familiarity with container platforms including Docker and Kubernetes.
Security Clearance Requirements
  • Active DOE Q Clearance, DOE L Clearance, or an active Top Secret or Top Secret/SCI clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain the required DOE security clearance.
  • Must be eligible to work within secure federal government environments.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting Department of Energy, Department of Defense, or other federal agencies.
  • 9+ years of experience supporting enterprise IT infrastructure, including at least 3 years in cloud engineering or cloud operations.
  • Experience with hybrid cloud architectures.
  • Familiarity with VMware, Nutanix, and/or other virtualization technologies.
  • Experience implementing Zero Trust Architecture.
  • Experience with monitoring tools such as Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, and/or Cloud-native monitoring platforms.
  • Knowledge of backup, disaster recovery, and high availability solutions.
  • Experience supporting classified or sensitive government environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively work both independently and within cross-functional teams.

Target Salary Range

$112,000 - $179,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual's experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
