Job summary

WSP is seeking a Senior Civil/Environmental Engineer for our Chicago, IL office to lead planning, permitting, and delivery of environmental investigations, remedial design, and construction implementation across the Midwest.

The role requires 7–10 years of environmental experience, PE licensure in Illinois, strong regulatory navigation, and a track record of managing scope, budget, and schedules while ensuring QA/QC. Occasional travel and adherence to safety policies are expected.

Qualifications

  • BS or BA in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering.
  • 7 to 10 years of experience as an environmental professional.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois; additional state licenses a plus.
  • Experience coordinating with clients, permitting and regulatory agencies, and environmental staff.
  • Experience leading and reviewing environmental and design reports and permit applications.
  • Self-leadership and interpersonal communication at all levels.
  • Ability to work independently and lead junior team members with QA/QC.
  • Proficiency in technical writing and office software.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Uphold safety and compliance with company policies.
  • Occasional travel; OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour training completed.
  • First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.

Opportunity

WSP is actively recruiting a Senior Civil/Environmental Engineer for our Chicago, Illinois office. The role focuses on planning, permitting, execution, and delivery of environmental investigations, remedial design, and construction implementation for projects across the Midwest. Projects include linear transportation, water and wastewater, RCRA permitting/corrective action, and CERCLA sites. The ideal candidate will have strong investigation expertise, remedial alternative selection, and the ability to navigate complex regulatory environments while ensuring project performance, budget, schedule, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities
  • Develop designs and work plans ranging from multi‑media environmental sampling equipment specifications to remedial design and construction implementation, with minimal supervision.
  • Actively engage in business development and proposal writing.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance related to data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record‑keeping.
  • Prepare data visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, models, and cross‑sections for complex data interpretation and presentation.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research findings and recommendations to address, prevent, control, or restore mid‑ to large‑scale environmental problems.
  • Oversee and monitor cross‑functional teams to execute project work, permitting strategy, environmental impact assessments, and regulatory compliance, including tracking budgets, hours, and expenses.
  • Provide high‑level oversight for desk‑based research, fieldwork, and laboratory work, including measurements, data interpretation, and computer modeling.
  • Assist with project scoping and development for medium‑to‑large‑sized projects.
  • Guide technical staff and project managers on environmental risk identification, assessment, threat mitigation, and remediation projects.
  • Collaborate with professionals across disciplines to develop future‑ready solutions for clients.
  • Coordinate with clients, regulatory agencies, and technical staff in a confident and professional manner.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Qualifications
  • BS or BA in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering with a focus on civil engineering.
  • 7 to 10 years of experience as an environmental professional, completing environmental designs, surveys, fieldwork, and/or construction monitoring.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois; additional state licenses considered a plus.
  • Experience coordinating with clients, permitting and regulatory agencies, and environmental technical staff.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and reviewing environmental and design technical reports, environmental impact evaluations, siting reports, and permit applications, including field surveys and impact assessments for commercial, renewable energy, and infrastructure projects.
  • Self‑leadership and interpersonal communication skills at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to work independently and lead junior team members while maintaining strict QA/QC standards.
  • Proficiency in technical writing, office automation, and communication software and tools.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to derive conclusions from testing results, data collation, and identify effective solutions.
  • Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, and anti‑harassment policies.
  • Flexibility to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek due to project demands.
  • Occasional travel contingent on project needs.
  • Completed 40‑hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120).
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
