Job description

Arcadis is the world's leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets.

We are more than 34,000 people, in over 30 countries, dedicated to improving quality of life. Everyone has an important role to play. With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world’s most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.

Arcadis is seeking a highly experienced Senior Civil Engineer to join our Design Engineering team and play a key role in delivering complex, high-impact civil and environmental projects across North America. This hybrid-flexible opportunity may be based out of any Arcadis office in the Eastern US and is well suited for a senior practitioner who enjoys technical leadership, multidisciplinary collaboration, and mentoring the next generation of engineers.

In this role, you will provide technical leadership for a growing portfolio of site development, reclamation, restoration, stormwater, and civil infrastructure projects. You will help guide projects from early planning and feasibility through design, permitting, construction support, and project closeout. This position offers the opportunity to lead challenging work involving large-scale earthwork and regrading, engineered cap and cover systems, environmental reclamation, road and culvert design, land development, drainage improvements, and stream and wetland restoration. The role is primarily office based, with periodic project-related travel for site visits, client meetings, field reviews, and construction support.

Role accountabilities

Role accountabilities will include leading civil engineering design efforts from proposal development and conceptual planning through final design and construction support. The successful candidate will serve as a technical lead and trusted advisor for project teams and clients, helping define design approaches, evaluate alternatives, manage technical risk, and deliver practical, constructible solutions. Responsibilities will include reviewing and interpreting technical reports, maps, drawings, test results, aerial imagery, geotechnical information, hydrologic and hydraulic data, and other project-specific information needed to support civil design development. The candidate will also evaluate applicable regulations, permitting requirements, and engineering standards to develop designs that are technically sound, compliant, and responsive to project objectives. Using 3D civil site design software such as Autodesk Civil 3D or similar platforms, the candidate will lead development of grading plans, drainage layouts, earthwork optimization, civil details, and quantity estimates. During design development, the candidate will oversee drawing production, provide technical guidance to design staff, and review work products for quality, consistency, and constructability. During construction, responsibilities may include responding to RFIs, reviewing technical submittals, supporting contractor coordination, evaluating field conditions, and implementing design revisions as needed.

  • Leading hydrologic and hydraulic evaluations to support drainage design, flood mitigation, stormwater management, and permitting decisions.
  • Preparing and reviewing technical reports, design memoranda, construction specifications, calculations, opinions of probable construction cost, and permit-support documentation.
  • Designing stormwater best management practices, erosion and sediment control measures, infiltration systems, bioretention areas, filters, conveyance improvements, and related civil infrastructure in accordance with applicable agency requirements.
  • Providing senior-level quality reviews of drawings, calculations, technical deliverables, and construction-phase responses.
  • Coordinating effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including environmental scientists, geotechnical engineers, water resources engineers, surveyors, CAD designers, contractors, and project managers.
  • Mentoring, coaching, and delegating work to junior and mid-level engineers while helping build technical capability within the team.
  • Supporting client engagement, proposal development, scope definition, schedule planning, and budget management for civil design tasks.
Qualifications & Experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 8 years' experience as a civil engineer
  • Proficiency with 3D civil site design using computer-based modeling applications (i.e., AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar).
  • Proficiency with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software (e.g., HydroCAD, HEC-HMS, SWMM, or similar)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 13 years' experience as a civil engineer
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) License
  • Proficiency with hydraulic river modeling applications (i.e., HEC-RAS)
