Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field, or BA/MS with 5+ years of experience.
  • 5+ years in organic/polymer/dyes/pigments synthesis and related areas.
  • Strong foundation in materials chemistry and structure–property relationships.
  • Experience with analytical instruments such as GC-MS, HPLC, NMR, FTIR, UV-Vis, DSC, XRD, TEM.
  • Ability to design experiments, interpret data, and solve technical problems.

Responsibilities

  • Leads safety initiatives and promotes a safe workplace and GLP practices.
  • Designs and executes experiments to develop dyes, pigments, surfactants, and polymers.
  • Performs molecular design, synthesis, formulation, and material processing for lab samples.
  • Interprets analytical data and informs experimental design for improvement.
  • Drafts technical documents for IP protection and trade show demonstrations.
  • Collaborates with suppliers, customers, and Sun divisions for product development.
  • Keeps current with literature on pigments and additives.
  • Follows all safety and quality protocols and supports training per SOPs.

Position Summary/Objectives:

This position is responsible for developing advanced organic materials, including dyes and pigment, surfactants and polymers, to meet customers' ever-growing demands for color materials.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Demonstrates leadership in promoting a safe workplace by active participation in safety improvement, best practices GLP and incident reporting/evaluation
  • Designs and executes experimental plans to develop novel dyes, pigments, surfactants and polymers with improved performance, environmental and health compliance, and cost savings to meet customer requirements.
  • Performs molecular design, chemical synthesis, ingredient selection and formulation, and materials processing to produce lab samples for evaluation.
  • Reviews and interprets analytical and materials evaluation data and incorporates these data into experimental design for technology improvement.li>
  • Drafts technical documents for patent and intellectual property protection and trade show demonstration.
  • Interacts with suppliers, customers and other Sun Chemical Divisions/locations to identify and understand problems and requests and integrates into daily activities for product development.
  • Studies literature to keep current with new developments in pigment and additives.
  • Understands and follows all safety protocols, ensuring that safety is first priority in all activities. Identifies safety improvements for continuous improvement
  • Performs procedures and documentation required by the Quality Management System.
  • Assigned to assist in the training following SOP and training guidelines based on safety record, operational expertise, experience and knowledge of equipment.
  • May perform other duties as required
Required Education & Experience:
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science and Chemical Engineering or related fields; or BA/MS in Chemistry, Materials Science and Chemical Engineering or related fields plus 5+ years' experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in organic/polymer/dyes/pigments synthesis, surface modification, or specialty chemical development.
  • Solid foundation in organic/polymer materials chemistry, synthetic mechanism and structure-property relationships.
  • Strong understanding of crystallization, particle engineering, dispersion technology, and solid-state material properties.
  • Experience with basic analytical instruments such as GC-MS, HPLC, NMR, FTIR, UV-Vis, DSC, XRD and TEM.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and critically analyze technical problems, independently design experiments, interpret results, troubleshoot technical issues, and develop effective solutions.
  • Working knowledge of color science and formulation science involving pigments, coatings, inks, plastics, display materials, or related applications.
  • Good communication skills and computer skills.
  • Experience with literature search platforms such as SciFinder
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite software (Excel, MS Word, Power Point.)
