61st Street Service Corporation is seeking a Senior CMA (SCMA) to join the patient care team supporting ColumbiaDoctors. The role combines clinical and administrative duties, including phlebotomy, charting in the Epic EMR, and coordinating patient flow.

The SCMA will work across multiple specialties with minimal supervision, contributing to quality improvement and safety initiatives while maintaining a patient‑centered, service‑oriented culture.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree preferred.
  • Certified CMA or equivalent credential is desirable but not always required.

  • Familiarity with EMR systems, especially Epic, is required.

Job Summary:

The Senior CMA (SCMA) is an experienced Medical Assistant with a proven record of handling complex cases and using independent judgment. In addition to clinical and administrative duties, this person will support quality improvement activities to ensure quality patient care. The SCMA is able to perform with minimal supervision. As a key member of the patient care team, the SCMA will work closely with providers across multiple specialties as well as with other clinical and administrative staff to deliver an exceptional patient experience that contributes to positive health outcomes for patients and a work culture in alignment with our values of Service-Oriented, Trust, Empathy, Safety, Inclusion, and Communication.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Greet and interact with patients, visitors, vendors, and all faculty and staff.
  • Prepare patients for their visit including:
    • Pre-visit organization of information required for an efficient in-office experience, performing patient escort and rooming functions (taking vital signs, medication reconciliation, accurate documentation of chief complaint, updating history as requested, updating EMR (Epic) as required).
    • Assisting patients as needed with walking, dressing, collecting and processing specimens and point-of-care testing, preparing for exam, etc. Serving as a chaperone in the exam room as requested.
    • Assisting physicians with examinations, procedures, and department‑specific therapies that does not require medical judgement or decision making.
    • Performing phlebotomy duties and point‑of‑care tests such as urinalysis and pregnancy tests.
    • Preparing and labeling collected specimens and ensuring timely delivery of specimens to appropriate designation.
    • Ensuring that proper labs are drawn and documented via Epic. Assisting in troubleshooting missing labs from Epic as instructed by supervisor.
    • Entering orders in Epic as required.
    • Notifying physicians and nurses of emergencies and performing first aid.
    • Open sterile packages, under the continuous and direct supervision of an appropriately licensed and credentialed individual.
    • May remove sutures or staples under the supervision of a physician or other appropriately licensed person, provided that the patient is evaluated, at a minimum, immediately before the procedure by an appropriately licensed professional.
    • Open sterile packages, under the continuous and direct supervision of an appropriately licensed and credentialed individual.
    • Assist in the sterilization and autoclaving process by following established protocols or operating sterilization equipment; however, the actual sterilization of instruments, especially for pre‑procedure preparation, is typically outside the CMA’s scope of practice unless directly supervised by a licensed provider.
    • Ensuring that the overall condition of the treatment room is clean and safe. Escalating any issues as appropriate. Ensuring inventory and adequate supply of personal protective equipment and other hygiene products in the patient treatment area. Notifying management when supplies are low and need re‑stocking.
  • Perform additional specialty‑specific duties as assigned and based on clinical operational needs.
  • Managing and tracking the patient flow from arrival until exam room departure using an EMR system, including welcoming and informing patients of any delays.
  • Serving as a liaison between physicians and other individuals such as patients.
  • Preparing and maintaining medical charts.
  • Copying and mailing requests for medical records, ensuring HIPAA compliance.
  • Performing additional check‑out functions such as scheduling, referrals, and additional tasks as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Please note: In some practices and based on operational need, the CMA may be required to perform full scope of front desk duties in conjunction with or in lieu of CMA duties (e.g., check‑in, pre‑registration, appointment scheduling and related follow‑up).

  • Share knowledge and offer guidance/mentorship to facilitate team collaboration and a supportive environment.
  • May assist with daily staffing schedules, same day absences, etc. Help to ensure adequate coverage and address related issues as directed.

Job Qualifications:
  • High school graduate or equivalency and graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant program, plus specialized certifications as needed.
  • CMA must be certified by a credentialing body.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a medical assistant role.
  • Current BCLS/AED certification required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and/or understanding of EMR systems.
  • Prior experience in front desk support and/or workflows.
  • Candidate must demonstrate strong aptitude for detail, flexibility, adaptation to change, and ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with OSHA standards, including disposal of biohazard waste.
  • Must demonstrate strong organizational and problem‑solving skills. Ability to perform across multi‑disciplinary and/or specialty areas while maintaining high productivity and a professional and service‑ oriented demeanor.
  • Ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and respectful manner while appreciating the unique contributions of an inclusive workforce that brings together the talents of people across multiple identities.

  • Prior Epic experience preferred.
Hourly Rate Ranges: $25.48 - $35.10
