Job summary

Pleasant View Nursing Home is seeking an Assistant Cook to support the Cook in preparing meals for residents, with responsibilities across all food-service tasks in a long-term care setting.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma, at least one year of institutional kitchen experience, and a commitment to attendance and safety. This on-site role requires teamwork with nursing and environmental staff.

Qualifications

• High school diploma.
• 1 year commercial or institutional food preparation experience, preferably in a long-term care setting, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• An excellent attendance record is required.
• Have a basic understanding of caring for the elderly and special needs.
• Have a basic understanding of Resident Rights.
• Have a basic understanding of Abuse Prevention and Reporting.
• Have a basic understanding of change of condition.
• Have a basic understanding of accident prevention and safety.
• Have a basic understanding of Fire Safety and Tornado Safety.
• Have a basic understanding of dementia and approaches in caring for a person with dementia.
• Have a basic understanding of what to do when a resident presents in a combative, aggressive or difficult manner.
• Have a basic understanding of Infection Control Practice.

Responsibilities

• Assist Cook in all areas of work.
• In the absence of the Cook, assume their duties if appropriately trained and skilled.
• Supervise and prepare meals in large quantity.
• Prepare food, such as bread, rolls, pastries, etc.
• Supervise and assist in the entire daily cleanup procedure.
• Assign daily tasks to Food Service Assistants.
• Supervise and assist in the preparation of foods at the proper time for special diets.
• Relieve or substitute for absent employees if needed.
• Fill food requisitions from Nursing and Activities.
• Prepare tray and menu labels as well as tickets utilizing computer equipment.
• Obtain products from storage if needed for completion of menu item.
• Assist with dishwashing procedure if needed.
• Perform any other tasks that may be assigned.
