Job summary

MFA Oil Company seeks a Senior Business Intelligence Analyst to turn data into clear, compelling stories for leadership and end users. You will build Power BI reports and Power Apps on the Power Platform using MFA Oil's data lakehouse, and help design data marts in the gold layer.

You will mentor analysts, validate results with SQL and Excel, and promote adoption of AI-assisted tools while maintaining data context in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in business, information technology, statistics, or related field.

Responsibilities

• Partner with business users to understand processes, priorities, and pain points and translate into reporting and app solutions.
• Mentor and guide less experienced analysts on report design, storytelling, and business context.
• Contribute to data marts in the gold layer, working with data engineering to align structures with reporting needs.
• Test and verify the accuracy of reports, apps, and underlying data using SQL and Excel.
• Act as a domain expert in training and implementing data agents and Copilot capabilities, ensuring accuracy and business relevance.
• Evaluate AI-assisted outputs for accuracy and avoid relying on them without validation.
• Identify opportunities to improve or automate reporting processes and promote best practices across the BI function.

Overview

The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst works with all levels of the organization to turn data into clear, compelling stories that drive business decisions. This position primarily builds Power BI reports and Power Platform Power Apps using data from MFA Oil's data lakehouse, with a strong emphasis on understanding the business behind the numbers and communicating insights in a way that resonates with leadership and end users. This role also contributes to the design and building of data marts in the gold layer and partners with the business to guide the adoption of data agents and Copilot capabilities, focusing on business context and validation rather than the underlying data engineering.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards that translate complex data into clear, actionable stories for leaders and business users
• Design, build, and maintain Power Apps solutions on the Power Platform, using the data lakehouse as the underlying source
• Partner with business users to deeply understand their processes, priorities, and pain points, and translate that understanding into effective reporting and app solutions
• Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced analysts on report design, storytelling technique, and business context
• Contribute to the design and build of data marts in the gold layer, working closely with data engineering to ensure structures support reporting and storytelling needs
• Test and verify the accuracy of reports, apps, and underlying data independently before delivery, using SQL and Excel as needed to validate results
• Serve as a business and data domain expert in the training and implementation of data agents and Copilot capabilities, ensuring outputs are accurate and grounded in real business context
• Independently evaluate AI-assisted or AI-generated outputs for accuracy, and verify results rather than relying on them at face value
• Identify opportunities to improve or automate reporting processes and drive adoption of best practices across the BI function

Job Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in business, information technology, statistics, or other related field; or an associate's degree plus related experience
• Five or more years of experience building reports and dashboards in Power BI, with a strong track record of data storytelling for business audiences
• Demonstrated ability to develop deep business knowledge and translate it into insights that influence decisions
• Strong SQL skills for querying and validating data
• Experience using Excel to test, cross-check, and validate report and data accuracy
• Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills, with the ability to both solicit information from and explain data clearly to non-technical audiences
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
• Self-motivated, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and drive work forward with minimal oversight

Preferred Skills

• Experience with Power Platform tools, including Power Apps and Power Automate
• Experience working with data warehouses or Lakehouse environments (Microsoft Fabric preferred)
• Familiarity with Python for light data manipulation or validation
• Experience with AI tools such as Copilot or data agents, including the ability to critically evaluate and verify AI-generated output rather than relying on it to understand the business or tell the story
• Experience as a functional business analyst
• Ability to think outside the box and research solutions to difficult problems
• Ability to set priorities and goals and develop plans for achieving them
