Job summary

The University of Texas at Arlington is seeking a Capital Projects Senior Building Inspector to coordinate and conduct inspections of complex university buildings under construction, ensuring compliance with codes, specifications, and project requirements.

This role manages a portfolio of 3–5 active projects with budgets from $10 million to over $100 million and collaborates with campus stakeholders, architects, and contractors to keep projects on track and compliant.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or G.E.D. is required with seven+ years of related experience.
• Experience in general building, contracting, municipal inspections of commercial buildings/structures.
• Licensed plumbing inspector in Texas and ICC certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs inspections of buildings and structures to ensure compliance with codes, specifications, and project requirements.
• Enforces building code provisions and UT Arlington specifications; reviews plans and approves alt methods for code compliance.
• Prepares inspection and field reports with data entry, photos, and filing.
• Maintains organized project documentation to support inspection activity and communication.
• Reviews construction drawings and coordinates with stakeholders during design reviews.
• Coordinates inspection activities with campus stakeholders, third-party inspectors, architects, and contractors.
• Conducts pre-construction meetings and explains applicable requirements to teams.
• Keeps up to date with codes and building-type requirements to support accurate inspections.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Job description

Purpose of Position
The Capital Projects Senior Building Inspector, under the general direction of the Director of Capital Projects, will coordinate and conduct inspections of complex higher-education buildings/structures under construction to ensure compliance with applicable codes, specifications, project requirements, and ordinances. The project portfolio consists of 3 to 5 active projects, each with budgets ranging from $10 million to over $100 million.

Essential Functions

• Performs inspections of buildings and structures to ensure compliance with applicable codes, specifications, project requirements, and ordinances.
• Enforces building code provisions and UT System and UT Arlington specifications related to construction methods, materials, repairs, additions, and related work; reviews plans as needed; approves alternate methods or materials for code compliance; investigates construction violations; and assists with resolution.
• Includes the preparation of inspection and field reports including data entry, photographic documentation, typing, and filing.
• Maintains organized project documentation to support inspection activity, code compliance, and project communication.
• Reviews construction drawings, specifications, and technical service contracts in collaboration with UTA stakeholders.
• Participates in design review sessions to help ensure projects align with the Owner's Project Requirements, UT System specifications, and UT Arlington specifications.
• Assists with developing the Owner's Project
• Requirements during the project planning phase to support project scope, design expectations, and alignment with institutional needs.
• Coordinates inspection activities with campus stakeholders, third-party inspectors, architects, and contractors.
• Conducts pre-construction meetings as needed and explains or interprets applicable requirements, restrictions, and project expectations.
• Assists with in-house projects as other duties allow and supports training for Building Inspectors as directed.
• Remains current with codes, regulations, and building-type requirements relevant to design and construction to support accurate inspections and code compliance.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or G.E.D. is required and seven (7) or more years of experience in general building, contracting, municipal inspections of commercial buildings/structures, including building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, etc. or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• A plumbing inspector’s license issued by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.
• Possession of the following ICC certification(s): ICC Commercial Combination Inspector (B2, E2, M2, P2).
• Possession of ICC Certified Building Official (CBO) certificate may be substituted for any of the above certifications.
• OSHA 30, or commitment to obtain within the first 6 months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate or bachelor’s degree and twelve (12) years of experience in general building, contracting, municipal inspections of commercial buildings/structures, including building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, etc. or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• A plumbing inspector’s license issued by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.
• Any endorsements on the Texas Plumbing inspector’s license.
• Any additional ICC certifications.
• Any additional training or experience in a related field.
• Possession of the following ICC certification(s): ICC Commercial Combination Inspector (B2, E2, M2, P2), ICC Building Plans Examiner.
• Possession of ICC Certified Building Official (CBO) certificate may be substituted for any of the above certifications.
• OSHA 30, or commitment to obtain within the first 6 months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Experience using MS Office, Adobe, Bluebeam, and related computer applications.
• Ability to climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and similar structures using hands, arms, feet, and legs.
• Ability to balance, stand, walk, crouch, kneel, crawl, bend, reach, and move between work sites, including on narrow, slippery, uneven, or moving surfaces.
• Ability to push, pull, lift, carry, type, handle, grasp, feel, and perform repetitive hand, wrist, and finger motions.
• Ability to communicate detailed spoken instructions and hear normal speaking levels, with or without correction.
• Ability to perform light work, including exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally and 10 pounds frequently, with visual acuity to review work and observe facilities or structures.

Work Schedule

• Monday through Friday; 8:00am through 5:00pm
