Job summary

Stantec’s New York City office seeks a Senior Bridge Design Engineer to lead bridge design squads on large-scale infrastructure projects and pursuits. The role focuses on AASHTO LRFD-based design, complex interchanges, and design-build/DBB environments, with oversight of deliverables and client coordination.

You will mentor junior engineers and CAD staff, coordinate with NYSDOT and local agencies, and drive design quality from criteria to final construction documents.

Qualifications

  • PE license in NY and NJ or ability to obtain
  • 10-15 years of bridge design experience
  • Familiarity with NYSDOT standards and local DOT agencies
  • Ability to lead multiple squads and deliver complex projects
  • Experience with AASHTO-based bridge design and design-build/DBB environments

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and review of bridge components to meet criteria and specs
  • Oversee bridge designs, advise on constructability, act as Package Lead
  • Proficient in AASHTO LRFD and local design codes
  • Develop design deliverables, criteria, plans, specs, quantities and calculations
  • Monitor milestones and ensure timely bridge activity completion
  • Mentor and guide multiple squads and CAD designers
  • Lead preparation of design/construct documents per NYSDOT standards
  • Resolve complex technical problems and exercise independent judgment
  • Review construction documents and support field changes during construction
  • Lead design-build pursuits and development of concepts
  • Coordinate with highway, traffic, geotechnical, drainage, lighting teams
  • Perform quality control checks on deliverables
  • Lead client development and coordination of submittals and meetings

Your Opportunity

Stantec’s New York City office is seeking a highly motivated and driven Senior Bridge Design Engineer to support our growing New York Bridge and Transportation practice to support engineering teams on large-scale infrastructure design projects and pursuits.

You will directly work with the Bridge and Structural Leadership and Project Managers to assist with leading bridge design squads on projects such as bridges, complex highway interchanges, roadway reconstruction and public spaces. This position requires a strong track record of leading and delivering complex, AASHTO-based bridge design, design-build projects and related structures.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and review of bridge components ensuring compliance with design criteria, design standards and specifications
  • Provide oversight and technical overview of bridge designs, advise on constructability and have the ability serve as the Package Lead or Engineer-of-Record for bridge design packages
  • Be proficient with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design and local bridge design code requirements
  • Provide oversight for development project design deliverables including design criteria, design plans, design specifications, quantities and related calculations for various design projects under Design/Build and Design/Bid/Build environments.
  • Monitor progress against design milestones to ensure timely completion of bridge activities
  • Supervise, mentor and technically guide multiple squads with mid-level and junior bridge engineers as well as CAD designers
  • Lead preparation of design and construction documents in accordance with NYSDOT and other local agency standards
  • Lead resolution of complex technical problems and exercise independent decision making
  • Review and approve construction documents and provide design support during construction activities (Shop Drawings, RFIs, Field related design changes, as-builts)
  • Lead design‑build pursuits, including development of technical and schematic concepts
  • Lead coordination with internal disciplines (highway, traffic, geotechnical, drainage, lighting)
  • Perform quality control and quality assurance checks on deliverables.
  • Lead client development initiatives, coordination including coordinating deliverables, submittals, meetings, review comments etc.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Licensed or ability to obtain the Professional Engineer license in the States of NY and NJ.
  • Proficient in Bridge Design and fast-paced bridge design work with ability to lead multiple squads
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art bridge design codes, bridge design software as well as CAD standards to provide direction to engineering bridge teams
  • Proficient knowledge of bridge design and load rating codes, legal and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions.
  • Ability to solve problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced design environment
  • Hands-on experience with agencies such as NYSDOT, NYCDOT, MTA, PANYNJ, is desired
Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in Civil (Structural) Engineering from an accredited institution preferred or Bachelor’s degree in Civil (Structural) Engineering from an accredited institution
  • 10-15 years’ experience in Bridge Design and/or design of transportation structures
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in New York (or ability to obtain with 6 months)
  • Demonstrated experience delivering multi-span steel and concrete bridge projects (new designs and/rehabilitation)
  • Strong familiarity with relevant DOT standards, design manuals and standard sheets
  • Experience with NYSDOT standards and local DOT agencies will be preferred
  • Ability to proactively identify structural risks and drive innovative solutions

Pay Range
  • Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD & Various CA, NJ, VA Areas-$117,800.00 - $176,800.00 Annually
  • Locations in NYC & CA (Bay Area) & NJ (RP)-$134,900.00 - $202,500.00 Annually
Pay Transparency:

In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.

Benefits Summary:
