Job summary

Thornton Tomasetti in Washington, DC, seeks a Senior Project Engineer for the Protective Design & Security Practice to lead blast, ballistics, and hardening efforts for diverse facilities, translating complex analyses into practical, implementable solutions.

You will mentor junior staff, engage with clients, and collaborate with structural engineers, architects, and security specialists to safeguard people and assets while growing the firm’s protective design capabilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering; graduate study in dynamics preferred.
• 6+ years in blast engineering, protective design, or facility hardening.
• Strong knowledge of structural dynamics and nonlinear behavior under blast/impact.
• Experience communicating technical findings to diverse stakeholders.
• Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clients.
• PE license; U.S. security clearance eligibility.

Responsibilities

• Provide protective design and physical security consulting for facilities.
• Perform blast loading, structural response, and nonlinear analyses using advanced software.
• Develop design solutions through drawings, models, specifications, and reports.
• Conduct vulnerability assessments, peer reviews, and security studies.
• Coordinate with clients, architects, engineers, contractors, and vendors.
• Support project planning, scopes, budgets, and submittals; mentor staff.
• Build client relationships and identify new protective design opportunities.
