Spire's Weather & Aviation business delivers global weather forecasts, flight tracking, and aviation data to customers who rely on it daily for decisions. We are strengthening the engineering foundations to keep our platform fast, secure, and dependable at scale.

We seek a Senior Backend Software Engineer to own critical services end to end, shape the architecture behind weather and aviation data, and raise the engineering bar as we grow.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of backend experience with production systems.
• Proven ability to scale services and reduce incidents.
• Deep knowledge of AWS and IaC tooling.
• Strong OIDC/OAuth2 identity and token management.
• Experience with REST APIs and real-time data endpoints.
• Familiar with NIST/ISO 27001 security principles.

Responsibilities

• Build and improve AWS-based backend services for availability and performance.
• Design authentication and authorization using OIDC/OAuth 2.0.
• Develop REST APIs and streaming endpoints delivering data.
• Improve observability, define and track SLOs.
• Participate in on-call rotation and incident response.
• Apply secure engineering practices to meet standards.
• Lead projects from design to rollout.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews and design discussions.
• Contribute to testing, IaC, change management.
• Collaborate with product owners and data scientists on backend alignment.
• Create and maintain API and architecture documentation.
