Makai seeks a Senior Backend Software Engineer for a fully remote, full-time role. You will design and implement backend services, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and focus on scalable, secure delivery.

The role emphasizes robust coding, performance testing, and maintaining existing systems. Ideal candidates have 7+ years in backend engineering, experience with Node.js/TypeScript, Docker, and microservices, plus familiarity with regulated environments and data access controls.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of backend software engineering experience, including production services
• Experience with regulated environments (HIPAA, SOC 2, HITRUST) and access/audit controls
• Strong ORM usage and schema validation practices
• Ability to rapidly learn new frameworks and tools
• Experience with relational data modeling and validation
• Familiarity with Docker-based deployments
• Understanding of microservices patterns and distributed systems
• Remote work experience in a fully distributed team

Responsibilities

• Develop features across Node.js/TypeScript backend services
• Optimize applications for speed and scalability
• Ensure the technical feasibility of UI/UX designs
• Collaborate with frontend engineers and product designers to improve usability
• Write robust, well-documented code and maintain existing applications
