Job summary

Steer Health is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to design and scale core services behind our AI-native platform. You will own end-to-end backend systems, build real-time data pipelines, and integrate with EHRs and healthcare APIs for reliable AI agent operations.

In this high-ownership role, you will drive architecture through production, ensure security for PHI, and mentor teammates. The stack includes Node.js, TypeScript, Kafka, and MongoDB, with strong emphasis on reliability and scalability

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend engineering with production ownership.
• Expert-level Node.js and TypeScript in production.
• Hands-on experience designing and operating Kafka-based eventing architectures.
• Deep MongoDB experience at scale, including indexing and performance tuning.
• Strong API design fundamentals and testing practices.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate backend services and APIs in Node.js and TypeScript.
• Architect and extend event-driven systems on Kafka with scalable design and back-pressure handling.
• Own MongoDB data modeling, indexing, aggregation, and performance optimization.
• Build secure integrations with EHRs and healthcare data standards (FHIR, HL7).
• Support AI agent workflows with fast, resilient data pipelines and real-time processing.
• Drive reliability and observability through monitoring, incident response, and postmortems.
