Job summary

IonQ, Inc. is seeking a deeply hands-on Senior Distributed Systems Engineer to own backend services for our quantum platform. You will design high-throughput ingestion, time-series storage, and APIs that power real-time visibility and reliability at scale.

You will write production Go and/or Rust, own on-call practices, and collaborate with the Principal Architect to deliver production-grade, observable systems across AWS/GCP/Azure, with multi-cloud patterns and strict data durability.

Qualifications

• 6+ years backend software engineering experience.
• Proficiency in Go and/or Rust with production systems.
• Experience building distributed data systems: streaming, time-series databases.
• Strong fundamentals in distributed systems: consistency, failure modes, backpressure.
• Cloud-native deployment: Docker, Kubernetes, AWS/GCP/Azure.
• Observability tooling: logging, metrics, tracing.
• SQL knowledge: relational and time-series data models.
• Test-driven or test-informed development and on-call ownership.

Responsibilities

• Design and ship production backend services in Go and/or Rust.
• Build telemetry ingestion pipelines using gNMI, NETCONF, SNMP.
• Develop RESTful and gRPC APIs for internal and external use.
• Evolve time-series storage and event streaming pipelines.
• Design data partitioning and archival strategies for performance and durability.
• Own service reliability end‑to‑end including on‑call and post‑mortems.
• Instrument services with logging, tracing, metrics (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus).
• Package and deploy on Kubernetes; manage IaC with Terraform across cloud providers.
• Collaborate with Architect to translate architecture into production-grade implementations.
• Lead code reviews and mentor junior engineers to raise quality.
