We're looking for a Senior Back End Developer to design, build, and operate the services and data behind our core platform, with enough front-end fluency to design optimal solutions alongside our front-end team. You'll spend most of your time in our Java/Spring Boot microservices, working closely with relational databases and AWS infrastructure, while also being comfortable reasoning about the client-facing side of what you build. This is a hands‑on senior role: strong problem‑solving instincts, sound technical judgment, and clear communication matter as much as raw coding ability, since you'll be expected to work through ambiguous technical problems and explain your thinking to engineers and non‑engineers alike. AI‑assisted development is core to how this team works day to day — you'll use approved AI coding tools as a standard part of your workflow to move faster, raise code quality, strengthen security, and improve performance across our services.
What You'll Do
- Build and ship. Design, develop, and maintain production Java services and APIs using Spring Boot
- Build with AI as a core tool. Make approved AI coding tools (e.g. Claude Code) a standard part of your daily workflow — using them to increase development velocity, strengthen code quality and security review, and identify performance optimizations across our Java services
- Own the data layer. Design efficient relational schemas, write and tune SQL queries, and manage schema changes through migrations as services evolve
- Work across the stack. Partner with front-end engineers on API contracts
- Operate in AWS. Build, deploy, and troubleshoot services running on AWS infrastructure (EC2, S3, Lambda, and related managed services), and balance tradeoffs with respect to cost, scaling, and reliability
- Solve hard problems. Debug complex, cross‐service issues in a microservice architecture, using AI‑assisted tooling to speed up root‑cause analysis, trace problems across service boundaries, and design solutions that hold up under real production load
- Champion code quality and security. Write automated tests, use AI‑assisted tooling to strengthen code review and catch security vulnerabilities earlier, and help uphold engineering standards across the team
- Communicate clearly. Explain technical decisions and trade‑offs to engineers, product managers, and non‑technical stakeholders, and document designs so others can build on them
- Mentor and collaborate. Share technical knowledge with teammates, contribute thoughtful code reviews, and take part in technical planning and estimation
What You'll Bring
- 5+ years of professional experience building back end applications and services on a Java stack similar to ours: Java (17+), Spring Boot, JPA/Hibernate
- AI‑driven engineering: Demonstrated, hands‑on fluency with modern, approved AI coding tools (such as Claude Code), used as a core part of your daily engineering practice — not an occasional aid — to accelerate delivery velocity, strengthen code quality and security posture, and optimize application performance across the stack
- Strong microservices experience, including service‑to‑service communication patterns (e.g. service discovery/registration, declarative REST clients) and designing services that are independently deployable and observable
- Significant AWS competency, with hands‑on experience deploying and operating workloads on AWS (EC2, S3, and Lambda or equivalent serverless compute), and enough infrastructure fluency to debug issues in a cloud environment
- Strong SQL and relational database skills, including schema design, query optimization, and comfort managing schema evolution through a migration tool
- Advanced problem‑solving skills, with a track record of debugging complex, multi‑service production issues and designing solutions rather than just patching symptoms
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain technical trade‑offs to technical and non‑technical audiences alike
- Testing discipline, with experience writing unit and integration tests as a standard part of delivering code
- Version control fluency, with Git and collaborative workflows (pull requests, code review, branching strategies)
- A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and CI/CD pipelines
- Familiarity with multiple public clouds and technology stacks (e.g. Azure, .net, etc.)
- Experience with token‑based authentication and securing service‑to‑service communication
- Exposure to event‑driven or asynchronous processing patterns across microservices
- Experience with additional AWS services for monitoring and deployment
- Prior experience in a product company building customer‑facing software
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation, commensurate with experience
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage
- 401(k) with company match
- Paid time off and company holidays
- A hybrid work environment with flexibility and a collaborative culture
- Opportunities for growth, mentorship, and technical leadership
