Job summary

Garmin is seeking a Senior Aviation Electrical/Design Engineer at our U.S. headquarters in the Kansas City area. The role involves ownership of the product design from concept to mass production, including complex embedded systems, high speed interfaces, and sensor technologies.

Overview

We are seeking a full-time Senior Aviation Electrical/Design Engineer at Garmin’s U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. Join a team designing innovative products that revolutionize flight through enhanced safety, performance, and features. You will apply your skills to create complex designs that include custom embedded systems, high speed interfaces, digital and analog processing, and a variety of sensor technologies using integrated and discrete solutions. Aviation Design Engineers have ownership of the product design over its entire life from the concept phase, schematic and PCB design iterations, and throughout mass production. As well as working with a skilled, multi-disciplined engineering team, you will work with our on‑site manufacturing center with capabilities that include PCB assembly, unit assembly, and acceptance testing.

Essential Functions
  • Design innovative electronic products for a broad range of aviation markets
  • Serve in leadership capacity for carrying out complex design and development of analog, digital or RF designs for products that involve complicated schematics and PCB design consisting of one or more PCB’s
  • May serve as a Project Engineer on new projects that involve a new design or major changes to an existing design
  • Team with Production and Engineering to design the best PCB solutions accounting for thermal and space constraints and to turn on new processors along with ensuring robust designs and appropriate testability
  • Collaborate and add value through participation in design reviews
  • Offer process improvement suggestions, author new procedures, and provide technical input to product development plans and concept documents along with making substantial contributions toward determination of project goal/objective feasibility
  • Plan and develop experimental test programs to verify compliance to all applicable regulations and quality guidelines using software tools and test equipment
  • Analyze test data and report to determine if the proposed design meets functional and performance specifications and to determine if applicable to developing other systems
  • Interface with the Test Engineers and factory personnel on the testing and production of products and support production facilities in the manufacture of products and direct and coordinate manufacture of prototype
  • Investigate, research and evaluate the usage of the latest components and technologies and perform cost/performance tradeoff analysis of different circuit options
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency with a complicated schematic and PCB design consisting of one or more PCB’s
  • Broad technical knowledge and skills in one or more areas of Electrical Engineering (e.g., analog, digital, RF, and/or DSP)
Desired Qualifications
  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
  • Extensive circuit design experience for consumer or aviation products
  • Passion for electronic design and curiosity for technology and innovative solutions to problems
  • Ability to work autonomously to engineer solutions to complex tasks, projects, and technical problems
  • Thrives working in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Ability to serve as a technical leader of projects to ensure successful execution of projects in alignment with cost, schedule, and other business objectives
  • Previous work or internship experience with circuit design for consumer or aviation products
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
