About the Role

Our client, a global leader in automotive technology solutions, is seeking a highly accomplished Senior Automotive Electronics Engineer to join their innovative, fully remote product development team. This role is pivotal in driving the design and implementation of advanced electronic control units (ECUs) and embedded systems for cutting-edge automotive applications. Working remotely from anywhere, you will contribute to the development of sophisticated electronic architectures that power modern vehicles. The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience in hardware design, microcontroller programming, and system integration within the automotive industry. This position requires a deep understanding of automotive communication protocols, power management, and functional safety standards. You will be instrumental in defining specifications, overseeing the hardware development lifecycle, and ensuring the reliability and performance of critical electronic systems, all while operating in a remote-first, collaborative environment. The position is based conceptually around Welkom, Free State, ZA , but is entirely remote.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop automotive electronic hardware, including schematic capture, PCB layout oversight, and component selection.
  • Develop and optimize firmware/embedded software for microcontrollers and processors used in ECUs.
  • Define hardware requirements and specifications based on system-level and product-level needs.
  • Integrate electronic modules and systems, ensuring seamless communication and functionality.
  • Conduct hardware bring-up, testing, debugging, and validation using laboratory equipment and simulation tools.
  • Analyze test results, identify failure modes, and implement corrective actions to ensure product reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, systems engineers, and validation teams, to ensure successful product delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with automotive standards such as ISO 26262 (Functional Safety), EMC/EMI regulations, and other relevant industry requirements.
  • Stay current with emerging trends and technologies in automotive electronics, microcontrollers, sensors, and communication protocols.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in automotive electronics hardware design and development.
  • Proven experience in designing and testing ECUs, sensor interfaces, power management circuits, and communication modules (CAN, LIN, Ethernet).
  • Strong proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems programming and debugging.
  • Experience with hardware description languages (VHDL/Verilog) for FPGA/ASIC design is a plus.
  • Familiarity with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (e.g., Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro).
  • Knowledge of automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN, FlexRay, Automotive Ethernet).
  • Understanding of functional safety (ISO 26262) principles and automotive cybersecurity concepts.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively manage projects in a remote work setting.
Benefits

This fully remote role offers a highly competitive salary and an attractive benefits package, including comprehensive health insurance, retirement savings options, and performance-based incentives.
