Job summary

Actalent in Springfield, VA is seeking a Sr Automation Engineer to design, program, and support PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems for natural gas gate stations and plant operations.

You will develop PLC and HMI code, configure communications, manage databases, and collaborate with IT, Gas Control, and engineering teams to ensure safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.

This permanent onsite role offers a hybrid-flexible work environment with travel to field sites and competitive compensation.

Qualifications

• Hands-on SCADA system design, integration, and management experience.
• PLC programming with vendor-specific languages.
• Strong understanding of process control in gate stations and plants.
• Experience building and maintaining communication infrastructure (cellular, radio, etc.).
• Knowledge of UDP, TCP/IP, Modbus, BSAP protocols.
• HMI development using vendor tools.
• Database administration with MS SQL/ANSI SQL for reporting and archival.
• Electrical Engineering/Computer Systems background; related discipline acceptable.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate to define system requirements using control systems knowledge.
• Design, develop, and test PLC code for gate station control and monitoring.
• Develop PLC logic for compressors, boilers, pumps, and valves for peak shaving.
• Configure and support communication infrastructure for remote monitoring.
• Interface with vendors to troubleshoot communications issues.
• Develop HMI code for graphical interfaces of gas delivery systems.
• Administer MS SQL databases and data archiving apps for reporting and compliance.
• Conduct start-up operations to verify design parameters.
