Job summary

The North Carolina Office of Indigent Defense Services is seeking an IDS Assistant Director (NS) to join the leadership team. The role reports directly to the Director and provides critical support to governance, legislative reporting, policy framework, and legal representation of the agency as General Counsel.

The candidate will hold a Juris Doctor, be admitted to the NC State Bar, and bring at least five years of progressively responsible legal experience, with supervisory experience

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in good standing with the NC State Bar.
  • At least five years of progressively responsible legal experience.
  • Management or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with North Carolina legislative processes.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all administrative functions of the Commission on Indigent Defense Services, including meeting planning, agenda preparation, and material development; facilitate Commission committee planning and coordinate logistics for Commission proceedings.
  • Oversee the agency's policy development process, coordinating input from relevant stakeholders and managing timelines for adoption and implementation.
  • Serve as General Counsel for the Office of Indigent Defense Services, advising on legal issues arising from the operation of IDS.
  • Respond to inquiries and complaints from the public; work with IDS Legal Assistant on public records request policies and processes.
  • Coordinate preparation of legislative and other required reports and provide legal review of contracts and instruments.
