Job summary

Inversion, based in Playa Vista, CA, seeks a Senior Applied AI Engineer to define and build the company’s internal AI tooling strategy from the ground up. You will own research, development, deployment, and iteration of AI systems that help teams work faster and make better decisions, starting with software engineering workflows and expanding company-wide.

You will join the Internal Software Tools team, report to the Director of Software, and influence the long-term product and technical vision

Qualifications

• Direct experience building and deploying applied AI or LLM-powered systems in production environments.
• Experience with modern LLM application patterns such as tool use, prompt design, structured outputs, agent workflows, or retrieval-based systems.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals including design, testing, debugging, and maintainability.
• Experience developing backend systems, APIs, internal tools, or automation frameworks.
• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience shipping production-grade software.
• Ability to operate in a high-ambiguity environment with changing priorities and undefined problem spaces.
• Position may require occasional extended hours and/or weekend work.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and deploy internal AI systems and agent-based workflows for teams across the company.
• Own end-to-end lifecycle of applied AI tools: define problems, prototype, evaluate, deploy, monitor, and maintain.
• Develop agent platforms and infrastructure for information retrieval, document analysis, and workflow automation.
• Research retrieval-augmented generation, tool use, prompt architecture, and model evaluation methods.
• Establish best practices for applied AI development, including experimentation and observability.
• Help define long-term AI strategy and be the first AI-focused engineer at Inversion.
