About the Role
Our client, a leader in embedded computing and processor-based technology solutions, is seeking a Senior Application Engineer to support advanced embedded processor platforms and their customers.
This is a highly technical, hands-on role combining embedded Linux engineering, hardware/software debugging, and customer-facing technical support. You'll work across Linux, Android, and FreeRTOS environments, troubleshoot complex field issues, support board-level design and verification, and help customers successfully integrate embedded processor technologies into their products.
The ideal candidate is equally comfortable at a Linux command line, reviewing a schematic, debugging hardware with an oscilloscope or JTAG, and working directly with customers to resolve complex technical problems.
What You’ll Do
- Design, develop, test, and support embedded processor platforms and peripheral interfaces.
- Build, modify, and support BSP images and drivers for Linux, Android, FreeRTOS, and related embedded environments.
- Troubleshoot complex customer hardware and software issues and provide clear technical guidance through resolution.
- Perform hands-on hardware debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG, and other engineering tools.
- Review system-level schematics, component specifications, test results, and technical requirements.
- Support design verification activities and ensure solutions meet product and system requirements.
- Work with embedded interfaces and connectivity technologies including USB, HDMI, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, CAN, SPI, and UART.
- Collaborate directly with customers, distribution partners, and internal engineering teams.
- Develop and maintain customer-facing technical documentation, support records, and engineering resources.
- Deliver technical training to customers and partners as needed.
- Serve as a technical resource, coach, and mentor to other members of the engineering organization.
Why This Role Stands Out
- Deep technical ownership: Work across embedded hardware, operating systems, BSPs, drivers, and processor platforms rather than being limited to one layer of the stack.
- Hands-on engineering: Spend your time solving real hardware and software problems, including board-level debugging and system integration.
- High customer impact: Directly influence customer success by solving challenging technical issues and helping customers bring embedded designs to life.
- Technical leadership: Serve as a senior engineering resource and mentor while remaining hands-on with the technology.
- Broad embedded technology exposure: Work with ARM-based processors, Linux, Android, FreeRTOS, and a wide range of peripheral interfaces.
- Relocation support: Relocation assistance is available for candidates moving to the Eden Prairie, Minnesota area.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor's degree with 10+ years of relevant applications engineering experience, or Master's degree with 8+ years of relevant experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or another related engineering discipline.
- Advanced Linux experience within embedded systems.
- Strong experience with ARM-based embedded processors.
- Hands-on experience working with Linux, Android, and FreeRTOS.
- Strong understanding of the interaction between embedded hardware and software.
- Hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG, and similar debugging tools.
- Strong customer-facing technical support, applications engineering, or troubleshooting experience.
- Experience with embedded interfaces such as USB, HDMI, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, CAN, SPI, and UART.
- Ability to manage multiple technical projects and shifting priorities in a fast-paced engineering environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly when explaining complex technical issues to customers and engineering stakeholders.
- Must qualify as a U.S. Person under applicable ITAR/EAR regulations.
Preferred Skills
- Experience developing or modifying Board Support Packages (BSPs), embedded drivers, or embedded system images.
- Experience with engineering and development tools such as Jira, Git, or Zoho.
- Experience providing technical training to customers, partners, or other engineers.
- Experience supporting processor-based products in customer-facing applications engineering environments.
- Ability to mentor engineers and serve as a technical subject‑matter resource.
What Your Day Could Look Like
You may start the day troubleshooting a customer's Linux or hardware integration issue, move into debugging an ARM-based processor platform with a logic analyzer or JTAG, and then review schematics or test results with the engineering team.
Later, you might modify a BSP or driver, support a design verification activity, work directly with a customer or distribution partner, and document the solution for future use.
This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced embedded engineer who enjoys solving difficult technical problems while working directly with the people using the technology.
