Job summary

Cumberland County Animal Services seeks an Animal Services Officer II to protect animals, public safety, and serve our community. This experienced role performs the full range of Animal Services Officer duties, including responding to animal-related calls, investigating complaints, enforcing ordinances and state laws, and supporting animal welfare initiatives.

The role also provides guidance to fellow officers, handles more complex calls, and may testify in court.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; 1 year as Animal Services Officer I or 3 years in public safety handling animals.
• NACA certification for ACOII within 12 months.
• Fear-Free certification, Certified Euthanasia Technician, Rabies Vaccinator, and Red Cross First Aid certifications required by hire.
• Pre-exposure rabies vaccine series or proof of prior vaccination with adequate titer.

Responsibilities

• Respond to animal-related calls and inquiries; explain applicable ordinances and procedures.
• Investigate animal-related complaints and violations with minimal supervision.
• Collect evidence, photographs, and documentation; prepare thorough case files in the Chameleon database.
• Issue citations and notices; prepare documentation for the chain of command.
• Testify in court and at hearings regarding investigations and actions.
• Safely capture, impound, transport, and maintain welfare of animals, including aggressive animals.
• Perform euthanasia and rabies vaccinations as authorized.
• De-escalate high-stress situations; coordinate with dispatchers, law enforcement, and other agencies.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to Animal Services Officer I staff.
• Operate radios and maintain safety; lift up to 50 pounds.
