Shelby County TN is seeking a Lead Animal Control Officer to enforce state and county animal control laws within unincorporated areas, supervise staff, and handle complex cases including bite and rabies concerns. The role requires leadership, strong communication, and a commitment to public health and safety.

Responsibilities include responding to dispatch calls, inspecting and impounding animals, transporting to facilities, and educating the public on licensing and vaccination programs.

Qualifications

• Three (3) years of experience in enforcement of codes related to animal and/or vector control in a lead or supervisory capacity.
• High school diploma or GED is required.

Responsabilités

• Responds to dispatch calls and patrols assigned areas using a County-issued vehicle to address animal-related complaints and public safety concerns.
• Investigates reports involving animal bites, abuse, neglect, or potentially dangerous animals.
• Verifies reported bite incidents by gathering information from victims, witnesses, and others.
• Takes possession of and impounds animals as required in rabies cases or to protect public health and safety.
• Transports animals to the appropriate agency, shelter, or facility for care or quarantine.
• Collects animal specimens for examination and transports them to the state laboratory.
• Issues citations or warrants and attends court hearings.
• Provides information to the public regarding licensing, vaccinations, and other animal control matters.
• Educates the public on responsible pet ownership and population control.
• May serve as Lead Animal Control Officer by guiding staff and volunteers.
