Job summary

Duolingo is seeking an Android engineer for the Application Stability and Performance team to own the app's stability and performance for millions of learners on the Android platform. You will lead architectural fixes, develop tooling for crash/memory analysis, and ensure performance metrics inform experiment analyses.

You will collaborate with Client Platform and Product teams, mentor engineers, and drive engineering excellence in performance across the stack.

Qualifications

• Experience identifying the root cause and resolving ANRs, memory leaks, dropped frames, and complex crashes.
• Strong Kotlin skills and deep familiarity with coroutines, Jetpack Compose, and modern architecture patterns.
• Experience optimizing startup time, memory, and network usage for low-memory devices.
• Worked on and shipped large scale Android applications.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a passion for tackling difficult challenges.
• Experience with crash observability tooling like Sentry and Android Vitals.
• Expertise in Android tracing tooling like the AndroidX Tracing Library and Perfetto.

Responsibilities

• Own stability and performance of the Duolingo Android app for millions of learners.
• Build tooling for crash and memory analysis used by other engineers.
• Own performance metrics feeding experiment analyses and surface regressions.
• Lead architectural initiatives to fix slowest parts of the app, from startup to critical learning flows.
• Own and evolve performance tooling with tracing, benchmarking, and regression detection.
• Bridge between Client Platform and Product feature teams to interpret performance data.
• Mentor engineers and foster a culture of engineering excellence around performance.
