Job Summary
HNTB’s National Aviation Planning + Environmental Practice is recruiting one or more Senior Aviation Terminal Planners. The role leads analytical and spatial analyses at large‑ and medium‑hub airports across the United States, covering projects from high‑level space programming to master planning, concept design, and advanced planning. Candidates must have extensive terminal planning experience, a deep understanding of terminal building relationships with landside and airside functions, and proficiency in Revit for concept development. The position also supports business development through relationship building, industry visibility, and proposal development.
Responsibilities
- Develop project scope, fee quotations, and assist in the preparation of technical proposals and contracts in accordance with HNTB’s Sophisticated Contracting Approach (SCA).
- Serve as the primary client liaison and manage the project team to deliver scope, schedule, and budgets to client satisfaction, leading or actively participating in client contract scoping and negotiations.
- Lead and prepare design documents, technical plans, and written reports on projects.
- Implement HNTB’s Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA) and lead the development and execution of the project management plan, supervising and mentoring the team toward project objectives.
- Oversee project staffing, including recruitment, hiring, development, retention, and succession planning.
- Partner with Client Service Leaders and pursuit champions to assist with business development and pursue mini‑mega and mega projects, preparing proposals and presentations.
- Take responsibility for recruitment, hiring, development, and retention of staff, including performance and compensation reviews.
- Manage project teams for strategic, mini‑mega, or mega projects, serving as discipline lead or project manager as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Engineering, Geology, Biology, Environmental Science, Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field and 10 years of relevant experience.
- 2 years of successful management of projects.
- Extensive terminal planning experience at busy, complex airports.
- Ability to assess analytical demand and spatial requirements using simulation modeling or spreadsheet analysis.
- Expertise in using Revit to create terminal schematic plans.
- Strong understanding of the aviation industry.
- History of winning, contracting, and delivering projects on time, on budget, and with client satisfaction in multi‑disciplined teams.
- Experience leading a team on mid‑size or moderately complex projects both inside and outside of HNTB, using sub‑consultants.
- Proficiency in using system tools to manage, monitor, and deliver mid‑size and moderately complex projects.
- Ability to implement HNTB Sophisticated processes with minimal assistance from the Office Management Team.
- Experience as the lead interface with the client on moderately complex projects.
- Capability to develop successors to continue working with the same client on future projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Architecture or Engineering.
- 12 years of relevant experience.
- Professional registration or certification such as AIA, NCARB, or Professional Engineer (PE).
- American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
