Job summary

The Mutual Group is seeking a Senior Actuary, Reserving to lead quarterly reserve analyses for Property & Casualty lines and to partner with Claims, Finance and Underwriting. You will develop and maintain reserving models, prepare analyses with sound judgment, and document assumptions with strong governance.

Qualifications

  • 5 to 8 years of actuarial experience in Property & Casualty insurance, with significant experience in reserving.
  • ACAS required; FCAS designation or active pursuit of FCAS preferred.
  • Strong understanding of loss reserving techniques, loss development analysis, reserve uncertainty, and actuarial modeling.
  • Proficiency with modeling and data analysis tools; experience with actuarial reserving software or programming tools preferred.
  • Experience supporting financial reporting, reserve reviews, audits, or regulatory requirements.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-actuarial audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently while collaborating effectively across teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality, governance, and documentation standards.
  • Familiarity with actuarial standards of practice (ASOPs) and reserving best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Perform quarterly Loss and LAE reserve analyses across assigned Property & Casualty lines of business.
  • Prepare reserve analyses and recommendations using appropriate actuarial techniques and judgment.
  • Ensure reserve indications are well-supported, documented, and consistent with actuarial standards and company policies.
  • Maintain reserving models, methodologies, and supporting documentation.
  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of reserving controls, governance processes, and documentation standards.
  • Perform diagnostic testing, trend analysis, and assumption reviews to evaluate reserve adequacy.
  • Partner with Finance to support financial close processes, reserve change analyses, audits, and regulatory reporting.
  • Support external actuarial reviews, audits, and regulatory examinations as needed.
  • Develop actuarial analyses and insights related to reserve performance, loss trends, and emerging risks.
  • Analyze development patterns, claim trends, and sources of reserve volatility.
  • Collaborate with Claims and Underwriting to understand operational and portfolio drivers impacting reserve results.
  • Perform scenario testing, reserve uncertainty assessments, and forecasting exercises.
  • Monitor emerging issues and communicate potential impacts on reserve adequacy and business performance.
  • Contribute actuarial analysis to reinsurance, capital planning, business planning, and other enterprise initiatives.
  • Contribute to enhancements in actuarial models, data processes, and analytical tools.
  • Develop and communicate clear analyses and recommendations to actuarial leadership and business partners.

Job Description

The Senior Actuary, Reserving performs and supports Property & Casualty reserve analyses across multiple lines of business. This role helps ensure the accuracy, integrity, and transparency of loss and loss adjustment expense reserves through sound actuarial analysis, strong technical execution, and disciplined documentation. The Senior Actuary partners with Claims, Finance, Underwriting, and other stakeholders to evaluate reserve adequacy, monitor emerging trends, and provide insights that support financial reporting and business decision-making. This position also supports continued improvement in reserving practices, governance, and analytical capabilities.

  • Employees who live within 30 miles of the TMG home office are expected to follow a hybrid or in-office schedule. The initial training period may require additional in-office days.
Accountabilities
Reserving Process

  • Contribute to departmental initiatives focused on process improvement, efficiency, and governance.
  • Communicate actuarial concepts and analytical findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Pay Range
Anticipated Hiring Range
  • $120,000 - $180,000 annual base salary depending on experience, qualifications, and geographic location
