Job description

Job Purpose

Senior Accountants at BELAY bridge day-to-day accounting execution with technical accounting expertise and client-facing financial insight. They are responsible for ensuring the accuracy, timeliness, and quality of recurring accounting services across an assigned client portfolio and serve as a key accounting escalation point for Staff Accountants and Bookkeepers.

Senior Accountants independently perform and review complex accounting activities, support month-end close, analyze financial results, and help identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and client outcomes. They provide guidance and technical support to Staff Accountants and Bookkeepers while partnering closely with Accounting Managers and Controllers to ensure consistent service delivery, appropriate client communication, and alignment with engagement scope. Senior Accountants are expected to lead through expertise, accountability, coaching, and collaboration.

Duties & Responsibilities

As a BELAY Team member, you will professionally represent the company in all virtual and in-person interactions. You are expected to exemplify our mission, vision, and core values while fostering a collaborative and positive team environment.

Client Service & Relationship Management
  • Serve as a primary accounting escalation point for day-to-day client questions, accounting issues, and complex transactions.
  • Communicate directly with clients regarding accounting matters, financial results, and recommended actions within the scope of the engagement.
  • Deliver accurate, timely, and meaningful financial reporting that helps clients understand business performance and key financial metrics.
  • Identify accounting, process, or reporting challenges and recommend practical solutions.
  • Partner with the Accounting Manager or Controller to maintain client satisfaction, address scope concerns, and ensure consistent service delivery.
  • Escalate complex technical accounting matters, significant scope concerns, or client risks to the Accounting Manager or Controller as appropriate.
  • Support a seamless client experience by partnering with internal teams and connecting clients with additional BELAY resources when appropriate.
Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting
  • Execute and oversee complex recurring accounting activities, including:
    • Month-end revenue entries and clearing account reconciliations
    • Inventory and cost of goods sold reconciliations and journal entries
    • Prepaid, accrued, and deferred revenue schedules
    • Balance sheet reconciliations
    • Financial statement preparation and review
    • Variance analysis and investigation
    • Accounts payable and accounts receivable support
    • Payroll accounting and reporting support
    • Cash flow reporting and analysis support
    • Sales tax and 1099 support, as applicable
  • Review financial statements and account reconciliations to identify unusual activity, errors, or areas requiring additional investigation.
  • Analyze financial results, gross profit margins, and key performance indicators to identify trends and potential issues.
  • Maintain accurate and well-organized accounting records within QuickBooks Online and other client systems.
  • Review work prepared by Staff Accountants and Bookkeepers for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established accounting processes.
  • Resolve accounting issues and provide technical guidance when transactions or reconciliations require additional research or judgment.
  • Ensure accounting work is completed in accordance with applicable accounting principles, internal controls, BELAY standards, and client-specific requirements.
Staff Accountant & Bookkeeper Support
  • Serve as a technical resource and escalation point for Staff Accountants and Bookkeepers.
  • Review work and provide timely, constructive feedback to improve accuracy, efficiency, and accounting knowledge.
  • Coach team members through complex reconciliations, transactions, month-end issues, and client-specific accounting questions.
  • Help Staff Accountants and Bookkeepers understand the "why" behind accounting requirements and processes rather than simply correcting work.
  • Identify recurring errors, knowledge gaps, or process challenges and communicate trends to the Accounting Manager.
  • Support onboarding and cross-training of Staff Accountants and Bookkeepers by sharing technical knowledge, best practices, and client-specific processes.
  • Reinforce standardized accounting procedures and help promote consistency across the team.
  • Serve as a resource for Bookkeepers when issues require additional accounting knowledge or escalation beyond routine bookkeeping responsibilities.
Process Improvement & Collaboration
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows, efficiency, accuracy, and automation.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of accounting processes, SOPs, and best practices.
  • Partner with Accounting Managers and Controllers on accounting initiatives, client transitions, and special projects.
  • Assist with client onboarding, transitions, and other projects when technical accounting support is needed.
  • Collaborate across BELAY teams to resolve issues and improve the overall client experience.
  • Demonstrate accountability, adaptability, sound judgment, and professional maturity in all interactions.
